2012 Coupe S Longevity
Hi,
I have a 2012 Coupe S with over 120k miles on it. I bought it in 2016 with a little over 50k miles on it. I love driving this car, but I'm a bit concerned about how it'll hold up in the future. It seems the car is needing more and more attention in the last couple years. I'm wondering what kind of life this car probably has left in it. What are some things I should be looking out for at this stage? Am I going to regret trying to keep it going?

I’m also interested to know. My 2012 bought used with 17300 miles on fitted with N18 motor (I think all R58s are) is at 37000. It had a water pump leak so it was changed. The vehicle service history I was given showed a failed rotary dial between the seats used to navigate the menus on centre consol. I fitted a GFB diverter valve and several people in our club said the factory ones fail, so you get no turbo increase power.
I also have the N18 turbo.
I do not track the car. At over 50,000 miles, everything is still good. When I bought the car, my oil changes just followed the oil service light. When I checked the oil, the level has been at the high fill mark, though rarely it did turn dark brown. After the maintenance plan expired, I have the oil changed every 5,000 miles.

It's had all the usuals. fuel pump, water pump, thermostat, various sensors, two flex pipes, I've gone through about two sets of fragile mini wheels, about the same amount of tires from bubbles or or bad uneven wear, the list goes on. Mini has always maintained the car. I took it in every time the car gave a notification. These things just don't seem to be built to last at all. The only reason I didn't get rid of it a year ago is I love driving it.

Unfortunately, in the case of Mini, this isn't a true statement. This car has been maintained by Mini exclusively and has been in for every notification the car has given. BMW just designed and built these cars poorly. They clearly know their market and built these cars to last long enough for their customers to get a new one every 5 years or so. Mine has shown an obvious downward trend beginning around 75,000 miles that hasn't seem to level out. North Jersey and NYC roads certainly aren't helping me out any, but this car has not been uncared for.

I am on my 3rd set of tires because the wear pattern seems to be the nature of the beast. It has never been abused, tracked or raced but maintained and serviced meticulously according to Mini specs. Fortunately, some big items are still covered by the 10Y/120K extended warranty but I will not keep it that long as far as I am concerned.
