Touch-up paint........

Everybody knows one day, we need to have a little "precious" bottle of touch-up paint to fix the unexpected paint chip...... it is a "must have" in the in the tool box.

We want to be sure it is the right mix and it will match the brand new color of your baby. Get ready to pay the big bucks.

It comes in two bottles....... one is the base coat, the other the clear coat.

Retail price on my invoice was $53.00, net price, more than $30.00 after taxes.

The package says touch-up made in Germany but the car is made in UK. The paint doesn't even match. Mine is Lighting Blue Metallic.

My other car is a Fiat and I thought I was over charged at $12.00 for a touch-up paint bottle. My Infiniti Pearl White was also $12.00 at the dealer parts store and was in stock.

Well...... any comments/

I wonder why Infiniti uses such cheap paint? And why is Fiat using such expensive paint?

So what are you trying to say?

You got a base coat and clear for 30$. If you actually shop around it could be cheaper. I paid 25$ for my set.

Yes it's more than 12$ But......then again we are getting two bottles of paint..

I want to add. If you use the langka system and remove the blobs and then clear it, it blends in a little more but my whitesilver also doesn't have an exact match....

Metallic paint is very difficult to match. The MINI brand touch up is as close as you are going to get, without a professional respray.

the MINI touchup paint sucks .... typical dealer crap ... thick goop

get your color code (under the bonnet if you don't know)

and order from

http://www.automotivetouchup.com/

I've used these folks for YEARS and the color match is perfect.

and I TOO use Langka

fixing a chip is not just 'paint' .... there is skill involved if you want it perfect.

Sorry but you missed the point. Everything should be in the same bottle as other manufacturers do. We are not talking of a paint job here but touch-up.

Both paint jobs are far better quality than the Mini and touch-ups easier to fix without messing with two products.

It comes in two bottles because one is clear coat and one is color. If the clear coat is scratched or chipped you can just touch up the clear coat. The touch up paint is thick because it is easier to apply to a chip if it is thick.

The Langka system takes a bit of skill to look nice but it works.

I missed the point?

I'm damn happy we have the CLEAR. And the ones you mentioned isn't a system where its 2 IN 1, there is no such thing.

If you are down to the metal or primer, adding touch up paint without using the langka system or clear is just asking for it to look like crap.

Maybe you should research more on how to properly repair a chip

Hey......I repaired paint chips on my daily drivers and fully restored classic cars for the last 40 years and I know very well what I am speaking about. The conditioning is the same the primer is still there or not. it is not rocket science.

You don't have to buy expensive kits as the Langka. Go to a professional automotive product supplier as House Of Colors or D'Angelos and you will have all the tools, brushes, compounds, glaze, sealers and anything else you may need including a sample of your base coat that will be properly matched right away to your car in the front parking lot and a small bottle of clear coat to fix your other scratches. Furthermore, some of these guys are very knowledgeable and will tell you the best options.

Also, the reason most manufacturers are selling paint touch up in one bottle instead of two (base and clear) is because it is a lot easier to use and the result is far better and the properties are the same. Furthermore, the metallic pigments blend and mix far better with the other inorganic compound and the build up to fill the chip is more consistent after the repair has cured for about a few days.

Following the cure come the sanding and buffing to smooth the surface. Novus products are designed for acrylic polishing and have even better properties than the automotive compound because they are far less aggressive. They are available in four grades. You need No1, and No2 only and glazing for finishing. They can be found in hobby stores for $12.00 for a set of 3 small bottles.

Now, for any serious chip over the size of a pen erazer that may be aggravated by a dent, the options are limited and far more expensive.....the re-spray is the best.

Result on Lightning Blue paint chip............

Final buffing to smooth the chip repair to the original clear coat has been done with Novus #2 and #1. They are clear acrylic polishing compounds.

My only disappointment is the base coat otherwise the match would be very close.

My dealer actually GAVE me a set of pepper white and clearcoat...for free. I used it to touch up a small gouge in the rear bumper. I got good advice at the parts counter...use a toothpick instead of the brush. Worked like a charm.

Your dealer has been really nice. You can also use a paper clip for very small chips.

For larger chips, go to a professional automotive paint supply store and ask for "toothpicks". They are small disposable brushes usually in packages of 20 or 40. They are inexpensive and work very well.
