De-striped my R58 today... Vinyl was badly faded

So I've had my R58 since about December 2012... I park my car on the street, and sometimes the car gets soaked from nearby sprinklers. The vinyl stripes started to fade, crack and stain HORRIBLY. So I decided just to remove the stripes today... Really easy, since it was warm out today. I'm thinking of blacking out the chrome trim and making it all black/red.

The Coupes look infinitely better with the sport stripes, IMO.

You can't have them re-applied then park somewhere else ? And that constant water is not good for your black trim and can't be all that good for your paint either.

I actually just moved to my area a couple months ago, and have never been around a sprinkler system. I've avoided those parking areas since then, but it looks like the water that was on there combined with the sunlight caused irreversible damage. I'm sure I can have them applied again, but I'd rather spend my $$ on having black grill trim and headlight trim

I agree that the stripes look good on the car, but I've also seen a few coupes around my area with solid color patterns that looked great. (silver body with black roof and black wheels.).

Agreed, get the Coupé restriped and then black out all the chrome

How did u get stripes off? Did you just peel off or use some type of chemical assist?

They peeled right off. I read some threads saying the vinyl was brittle and was difficult to remove, and required a heat gun. But it was warm out, and the vinyl wasn't difficult to take off.

I eventually will again. But blacking out my headlight/ tail lights will be much easier and cheaper for now. I'll get around to it eventually

Might have to do this to mine.

A year later and they're fading already. Complete BS!

Anyone know if it would be covered under warranty?

That is one of the first things to go. If you look at the used coupes at the dealer they all have faded stripes

Lesson learned, don't pay extra for crappy vinyl stripes from MINI.

I'm sure aftermarket vinyls would be of higher quality and last longer!

Not so sure I agree. We've had OEM stripes on two MINIs and one of them was sold four years later, stripes were in great shape. The other one, we just replaced the stripes last year, to change colors, and the stripes were in good shape after 6 years.

For my case it's crappy.

I do park outside...and it's almost always sunny in SoCal. It does hit high 90's where I'm at as well.

I'm going to see if this is covered forsure.

I'm going with custom stripes sooner than later. I really hope that the crap OEM ones I have come off as easy as I read here. Here's what I'm going with (I already have a black painted hood scoop):

I might go with a little wider pinstripe though...

Good point about exposure to elements. Our MINIs with the OEM stripes were garage kept. But they were daily drivers.

I park outside as well. The stripes on my Coupe seem to be sun bleached. Was told that the Spice Orange was Ink-jetted. Can't get the Vinyl unless you go back to the dealership and then they have to be sent from Germany. Wish there was a way of getting them locally. Have a section of stripes on my car that need to be replaced badly.

I just bought a used spice orange coupe and it is hot.....except for the striping. It is all pretty jacked, but the roof orange stripes are the worst. The front silver ones don't look great either. Has anyone gotten dealer pricing on replacement? Also is there a third party that has a match to the silver/orange color? Link? Really ruins the look!

Spice Orange you have to get from the dealership. The silver you can match at a place that does graphics for vehicles. My Coupe is Spice Orange and Black. My Black is ok but the Spice Orange is bleached white. I been thinking about purchasing Spice Orange paint and just paint the Stripes on.

Wouldnt fading stripes be covered under warranty?

Now Im worried since my car is getting intense sun exposure daily. I fortunately will have a garage in my new home here, but that wont be for another 9 months.

I was wondering the same thing about a possible warranty coverage on the stripes. If they were factory installed I would think it would be covered for something. Anybody asked about this? I'm in Florida and no garage so this is going to be a problem if this is just how they wear normally.

I was afraid that the spice orange would be direct from dealer only since they are such a unique color. Any word on price? Thought about painting as well, but don't think the paint would adhere well to the vinyl, and I would be terrified that even with meticulous taping I would mess up my silver roof.

Called my local dealer, they said it'll be replaced under warranty.

Sort of a win/lose.

Win because it'll be replaced at no cost to me.
Lose because at this rate, it looks like they'd have to be replaced every 1 1/2 years....warranties don't last forever lol.

Well I'm glad to hear they are replacing them. I have an appt tomorrow to take mine in for a few things, including the stripes. Hopefully my dealer sees it the same way. I agree on the longevity of the stripes. Any ideas or tips to keep them protected better?
