Embarrassed to have a justa for first time

So yesterday I'm driving home in my super fast looking coupe on a two lane highway when I go to pass two cars. There is Subaru station wagon behind me that's dying to pass as well. I find my chance to pass and downshift and gun it, as I'm passing I look thru my rear view mirror and see the flipping station wagon on my bumper trying to push me off the road! Is it just me or should the justa at least have 150 hp ? There is zero torque in my car until I am above 5000 rpms. The strange thing is when I get loaner cars with automatic trans they seem a lot faster then my manual trans... Weird

It sure would be nice to have 150HP, but honestly if you get really good at keeping it in the power band, planning a few moves ahead, and downshifting quickly, you won't have that problem very often. I'm never the guy holding up the passing lane. My justa is happy to quickly pull from 80-100MPH (On the autobahn, of course.) when I need to blast by someone.

Not to start a flamewar, but the Sprint Booster helps, too.

I have absolutely NO idea what you are on about.

I have an 07, 6 speed and have ZERO problem passing, even at 70 mph.

The engine is fine as it is.

I do not have any "S" envy.

I thought only the Cooper S (and their Direct Injection) suffered from carbon build up.

If the Subie was a WRX or an STi, well, OP didn't stand a chance. Those are quick cars that pull hard.

I think straight coopers only have 121 hp and not much torque. That's the problem. Well not really a problem, but most likely why passing cars will be more of a challenge.

I'm on my third MINI, and all of them have been Justas. The first two had manual transmissions (first was an '06 R50 Checkmate, and the second was a '10 R56). I now have a '12 Countryman with the auto trans. None of them have ever felt sluggish or underpowered. As a matter of fact, all of them (even the heavier, auto Countryman) have felt plenty zippy.

I downshift to third whenever I want to pass someone on the highway.
Justas sound awesome when its near redline. Add the DDM intake and it sounds like vtec lol

20,000 miles and you find that you have "zero torque until above 5000 RPM"? That sounds pretty serious! You'll be lucky if it's nothing more than carbon buildup.

I've never really brought my previous cars near the redline but its looking like my cooper needs to get up there to get some oomph! I've had my car for exactly one year now I'm still learning her behavior believe it or not.

Yeah you definitely want to be pretty high in the rev range to pass. Don't be scared to shift into third and pull from 5000RPM.

Sport mode and downshift! Third gear will take you through 70mph easily. These engines handle that easily.

1.6L of fury but 5k rpm is your friend, that's the whole fun of a 1600 engine

Justa's have traditional fuel injection, not direct injection, thus no carbon buildup problems.

Suggestion....
try higher octane fuel? Maybe the lack of tourqe at higher rpms are from a bit of timing pull. We all know many folks get-away with cheaper fuel....but the disclaimer of recomended for better performance line in the manual most likly hold true in more agressive driving at higher rpms!!
Sorry to have mentioned the carbon thing early on....just becomes such a issue for 50% of gen2 mini's made...hard to trmember the non-s's are pretty solid cars!!
The lack of hp can make a car MORE FUN...lol...drove a 89 crx HF for a bit....could wail on it all day...rev it up, have a blast!! Takes a bit of skill to keep a non-force fed car in the tourqe band, but guess looking ahead and planning with a stick is what kept it fun!!

I agree also..try I higher octane fuel.. It always seems to perform better with higher octane..even if it states you can use a lower grade fuel.. But its funny you stated you had a 89 CRX HF.. I did too..that was a fun car to drive!! I also had a SI model..but sold it to a friend of mine which 2 weeks later he totaled..lol..

FYI, your Justa coupe has LOTS more torque than a 1st gen Justa.

Don't be afraid of the higher RPMs. Without them our cars are granny carts.
