Motoringfile Reviews The MINI Coupe S & JCW

MF Review: 2012 MINI Coupe S & JCW

And here's one of the more interesting quotes:

Yet the Cooper S Coupé was simply more fun on regular roads than the JCW version. The torquey, Valvetronic-equipped turbo engine replaced the JCW’s snarling brute force with an eager gallop that for lack of a better description, was simply more cheerful. With Sport button on, the engine back burble rounded out the package to create a driving experience that, for me anyway, would be enjoyable every day.
Conclusion:

If I had to pick one over the other, I’d spend my own money on the Cooper S Coupé, rather than the JCW. Not because of price though, because when you stack the JCW Coupé against its rivals such as the Audi TT, you’re getting terrific value for money. No, I’d choose the Cooper S Coupé because it’d be so easy to live with and fun to drive in those every day situations. With the available JCW body kit and brakes added, the Cooper S Coupé would be the sweet spot for my garage.

Almost makes me glad I can't afford the JCW. The S will be a better sports car than I am a driver anyway...

"Moving through freeway traffic was effortless and downright giggle inducing."

That sums up my test drive nicely. I practically couldn't stop laughing the whole time. Or, when passing someone, more like an evil cackle.

Great review by Michael, do have to disagree. Guess part of that is being a GP driver therefor a stock S feels a bit casual lol. Still don't think you can make a wrong choice between all three models as each has their place.

Cool. I can't afford either, but I'm going to test drive the S next week anyway

The Big Test

I just drove the Coupe S on Saturday but I have not driven the JCW Coupe yet but will do so this Thursday.

I have to say that the Coupe S compared to my 09 MCS is night and day different. You can't even hear the engine running when at idle and parked. You can hear the exhaust note which is sweet. The new VVT engine is really in a different class than the 09 MCS. I really enjoyed driving it and will have a very tough decision coming up once I drive the JCW Coupe on Thursday. The JCW will have to really blow away the S Coupe otherwise the dealership and I will have to have a chat.

I will update Thursday.

Well I have to say after reading the MF review of the two cars I think I have to agree with the way the reviewer talked about the Coupe S car. I would agree. But it almost seemed too "cheerful" to use the reviewers words. I prefer a more bombastic car one that requires the driver to drive it. Heck If I want civilized I'll let my wife drive her Auto MCS and I'll be the passenger.

I'll have opportunity to make the final decision on Thursday. I really like brute strength (Thats why I also drive a GTO.) and while the JCW won't be like a GTO it certainly won't be "cheerful". (Not that there is anything wrong with that cause I REALLY enjoyed driving the S Coupe.)

Coming from an '09 MCS as well, I'd have to wholeheartedly agree with regard to the engine comparison.....like day and night.....even better than I had anticipated.
