2010 Cooper S Conv. problems

So far we've had the timing chain and everything that goes with that replaced, battery, every gasket around the convertible top, brakes twice, cooling light coming on but temp was okay, speakers rattling, fender well liner ripped to shreds after rivets came out, all in all about $5500 in work....All done under warranty. That warranty expired in November 2013.

Now the HK stereo won't make a sound and the radiator is leaking.

I knew I should have traded it in in November.

Anyone else having radiator or radio problems?

I've checked all the fuses I could find for the radio. The head unit display works, but no sound from it. Tried tuner, cd, usb, phone, etc. NOTHING at all.

There seems to be issues with the HK amps burning out. Maybe that's the issue.

As many as I have read about, I glad I don't have the HK system.

On the gen 1 MINI the HK amp were a problem, on newer Gen 2 MINIs I have not heard much.

One question, was your MINI in a wreak before? If it was and not repaired correctly for the front end might have issues like the radiator and the well liner not done correctly for 2010, made me wonder about that.

For the radiator there is an Automatic transmission version and the Manual transmission version.

For the HK amp it came in the 9/2009 and up MINIs R57 Convertibles. There is no inline fuse on the amp itself. Before that is was the Hifi Becker Unit.

Its mounted under the seat and you can check it, I would unplug it and plug it back in. Also check if the amp is getting warm.

Also I would check that fuse box again on the passenger side kick panel. Anything stereo or radio related.

Thanks and hope that helps.

Wow, you are a wealth of info. Thank you very much for the reply. I've got some checking to do, but I very well may get back to you. Doubt I'll buy a new amp for $855 but may need a radiator.

Sad that this car is falling apart with only 40,000 miles on it.

Got the cover off the area under the seat. That was a nightmare.
I cannot seem to get the wire connectors off the amp.
I'm trying to avoid taking the seat out, but I may have to just to put the cover back on.

So I see that one is the amp.
Any idea what the other silver box is?

That's is the HK amp ( 65129296634) in the front and the Bluetooth ULF ( 84109229740 ) module closest in the picture. Its the main brain for the Bluetooth system. You can unbolt the seat ( 4 bolts ) and tilt it forward. Don't disconnect any of the wire that go to the seat itself without disconnecting the battery, otherwise you will have a airbag error light come on. I have tilted the seat up before to access it , then used a block of wood to hold up the seat to access the plastic box under the seat. Its a little tight. You have the pictures of the modules, inspect them, make sure the plug wire is not damaged and the pins in the plugs are not bent. Unplug it and re plug it back in.

Bluetooth ULF module. Part # 84109229740

Thanks

Well I already disconnected the under seat wires and the airbag warning light came on. Any way to clear that? Thanks again by the way.

You are welcome. Any MINI dealership can clear it.

Here's the deal.

Replace HK Amp $1404.00

Replace thermostat, vanos solenoid, and vacuum pump - $1621.88

$3000 worth of repairs.

That would make close to $8500 in repairs since November.

I called Mini Customer Service and they offered to assist in alleviating some of the cost of the engine stuff, but not the stereo.

I cannot understand how a car can have so much wrong with it at only 40800 miles.

The MINI is no longer mine.

MINI USA paid for the amp. Of course they did after I found and purchased a non-refundable used one.
The dealership chipped in and reduced the cost of the labor for the other stuff.

It's a sad state when the Service Mgr tells you that these cars just are meant to have a long life. That's why we encourage the extended warranty. You'll get 3x the value of your $3000 extended warranty in repairs.

Wow!

Too bad. My wife who drove it daily cried when we traded it in. It was fun. But NO car is worth spending that much money in repairs on at that low mileage.

Adios to my former fellow motorists. I hope that your experiences are much better than ours turned out to be.

Wow it sounds like you have had a lot of issues with your 2010 Cooper S Convertible especially right after the warranty expired that can be really frustrating. I have heard of the HK stereo acting up where the display works but there’s no sound, and sometimes its an internal amplifier problem or a loose connection behind the head unit. The radiator leak is unfortunately another common issue as these cars age. Out of curiosity, did any of the previous warranty work involve disconnecting the audio wiring? It might have been affected. Thinking about all these repeated repairs reminds me that even vehicles like a Bnlboston Limo, which are well-maintained, can end up needing attention to smaller components over time. Are you planning to take it to a MINI specialist to check both the stereo and radiator together?
