In most states you DON'T give him the tag. You remove it, he takes title and whatever else the state requires and gets his own. You take yours in and de-register your car. Most states will then let you transfer the tag to a new vehicle. Call your local DMV for details. Your mileage may vary...

Varies by state. California has a $25 retention fee for specialized plates, I bet other states do too.
Do a quick search for your state.

In Alabama you have to turn in your old plate when you get another but... if your plate were say uhhhh lost or something they don't say anything.

A long time ago I sold my car and the new owner couldn't get the plates off, so I allowed them to drive home with my plates. BIG MISTAKE! They had an accident and for a year I received letters from the Division of Motor Vehicles about MY accident. I wrote them letters explaining everything and so did the new owner, and it was finally rectified. I learned my lesson. Now when I sell a car, if I'm not transferring the plates to my new car (which is allowed in NJ), I remove the plates, turn them in to the DMV, and get a receipt.

Oh, lol, another RX-7Club member.

Such a huge difference between the two boards.

BTW, no point in linking to the 7club lounge... have to be a member to read those threads.

I have a collection of "lost" plates. Only once did I get a letter from the State (not my present one) asking where one of my plates was. There was a box to check off on the form if it was lost. I checked and returned the form. That was it.

Depends on the state. In Texas, I don't think you can transfer plates. There is a form you can file for $5 that says "I sold my car to someone" to prevent law enforcment for coming after you if they don't file to register the car.

Right--in Texas "the plates stay with the car," according to the registration person I spoke to when I sold my previous car.

In Washington state you can go to a local licensing office and get replacement plates. There is a minor fee, but all you have to do is say they were stolen, or fell off, or whatever. You can then sell the car with the new plates and cherish your old ones.
