Should we start a paypal pool where we all chip in some cash and whoever can make a mod wins the prize.

Yep. me too. My MA says don't try the sport button until you have 1200 miles under your belt...

I've got 800 miles to go. That's about a weeks worth of driving for me

Been using my sport button since I took delivery with 19 miles; it's the first button I press after ignition - even before the radio.

I was told the same thing about the steptronic paddles in the auto trans. I wonder why those are both "bad" to use until after the car has been run in?

With the paddles you could accidentally take the engine above 4500 RPM. Not sure about the Sport Button. Perhaps the programming of the non-sport mode is more suitable for break-in.

There's a lot of debate on proper break in...

let's just say a lot of racers don't do what dealers say....

Anyway, it's much more different with the auto than the manual because of delayed shift points (around 4k or so). With the manual, you get a different throttle tip in, and different steering, but the shift points are still up to you.

Just getting used to my new MCS, but I agree with this statement. It feels like with the sport button OFF steering is quicker, with the sport button ON the steering wheel is heavier and takes more muscle to turn. Sort of like having tight (good) power steering by default, and by turning the sport button ON the power steering goes off, which takes some quickness away.

Just a prelimary observation on my part, but interesting to find a comment that is similar to my observation.

I've been driving my new MCS (with manual trans) for about a week now. The sport button certainly does make the car livelier, more hyper. However, I'm finding it easier to drive smoothly in heavy stop-and-go and boring freeway traffic with the sport button off. With sport on, the car feels like it is straining against a leash, and it is sort of tough to keep at a steady speed on the highway. Maybe I'm just getting old...

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for punching the button when the road starts to curve. The steering feel and the quick throttle response are just fine then

I agree with the statement about stop-n-go traffic, I like the sport button off for that. My MA told me he thought the sport button was most effective once in third gear and up. I've found that to be the case for me. With the sport button on the throttle is just a little too lively from a dead stop and once I've got some speed I prefer a harder turning steering wheel, on the freeway for example. I'm still in the break-in phase and use the button once in awhile, my MA never told me I shouldn't.

The sport button is a great feature. I try to avoid pushing it, but when I'm trying to get somewhere on the country roads where I live, I just can't resist. Its like having two different cars. It's amazing how apparent the change is to a passenger when I start to use it. And it was great fun to push it after my father in law had driven for about 5 miles. It will be even more interesting to drive after the break in period.

Regarding engaging the sport button immediately on start-up:

No need to idle a car in the morning these days to warm it up. Cars now are designed to warm up during the first few miles of travel. It would seem to me though that it's better not to stress the car when first starting out - i.e. Wait for at least a few miles before engaging the sport button.

Comments?

I put it on right after the car starts. I've never driven without it. When I have forgotten to use it I have stalled the car trying to pull away because I was not giving it enough throttle to launch.

are there any adverse effects of using the sport button all the time? I always shifted at lower RPMS before i got the mini and feel uncomfortable with the car running at 4500 rpms, feels like i have to shift to quiet the car.

sport button = the only way to drive
Dunno.
Could be as dangerous as driving with DSC turned off.

I find it much easier to shift smoothly in the lower gears with the sport button on. I thought I was alone until I read in other threads that other people had the same experience.

I'd guess that your previous car either had a larger motor, or it wasn't a sporty car. The Mini engine can live at higher RPMs just fine. In my Mustang engine, I could maybe pull 6k RPM, but 7k would put pistons through the block! And it's starting to loose torque at 5000 RPM. The Mini engines don't fade the torque as fast or as low and can sping to higher RPMs without issue.
