Addicted to sport button!!!
I don't know about any of you, but I find the car harder to drive without the sport button on. I'm used to the throttle being very responsive. If I drive without the sport button it seems I almost kill it every time.
I agree 100%! I've stalled the car a few times trying to pull out of a parking space when I forget to push the Sport button. The throttle response without the Sport button is like soft mush; the engine barely does a thing. With the Sport button pushed, the throttle behaves normally, or as you would expect with any car; reasonably linear.
Sport button is a mandatory park of my pre-flight checklist. It's just as important as starting the engine.

Yup, sport button = the only way to drive. Can't tell you how vague it is to get the car rolling without it. Now we just need to see how much mpg is wasted or not wasted. But in the end I think it'll be worth it to leave it on! I wholeheartedly subscribe to sport button on, I think it improves your state of happiness!
That'll be a decider for me...most of my weekday commuting can easily be done w/o sport mode if the throttle response is proving to improve fuel economy...even a little. The weekend, however, will be an entirely different story!!!

I think I'm going to try to drive the car an entire tank without the sport button on. See if there is any difference. I don't know if I'll be able to do it though.
EDIT: Anyone with a fair amount of self-restraint able to carry out such a test? One tank sport button on all the time, one tank sport button off?

....and then there's the steering. With the Sport button off, it just has a bit too much play for me. I could get used to it if I had to, but since I don't, it's ON, all the time. As said earlier, it's just part of the "start-up procedure."
I went through a tank where I used the sport button quite a bit, and it appears to have reduced my gas mileage by about 10%. I'm finding that driving without it is just fine, driving with it is fine, depending on the situation.
Sure, I can manage that much discipline for science. Just bring your MINI over for me to drive. Mine is still in Oxford.
I can't. The throttle response without the sport button is just too different from my Acura that I am coming from, where as with the sport button it is about the same to perhaps the power coming on sooner. The few times I have forgotten to press the button I get this immediate panic in my gut - "Something is wrong with the engine today!" and then I remember I did not press the button. I just don't have time to get used to this!
The sport button is really cool. From what I have been able to tell through some experimentation, the obvious, it tightens up the steering, and increases throttle response. The not so obvious, I believe it controls the rate at which the turbos spin up, and possibly the air/fuel maps in the onboard computer. Curiously, in non-sport mode, the cars gets pretty zippy once you get over 4000 rpm. I am still in the breakin period, so I don't know what it really can do just yet. A few more weeks...
I have an Auterra Dyno program for my Treo, so once broken in I am hoping to run some tests in sport and non-sport and post my findings here on NAM later this summer...

When I get my MINI in a couple of weeks I'll probably try the sport button once or twice, but only to see what it's like and why everyone says it's so great. I'm sure I'll be able to stop whenever I want, I mean, I'm strong that way, I won't get hooked like those weakwilled people

I've made a vow to leave the magic button alone until the car is run in. I'll have to be strong and concentrate on my breathing and keep repeating my mantra until the first 1200 miles are on the ODO. (sometimes I seem to forget my mantra)

Hack the sport button?
Once I established my habit of foot flexation I find it very difficult to drive without the sport button on. Not just for thrills. I find it hard to modulate the accelerator pedal. You really need to stomp on it with the sport button off. So I turn it on every time I start the engine. Another button to push.
My issue is that I prefer the feel of the steering with the button off. To me, the steering feels more numb with the button on. The opposite of what it's meant to be. I even wondered if a switch got set up wrong somewhere.
Any tricks to have the sport button on for accelerator response, but off for steering? I imagine if this one can be hacked, it can also be hacked to stay in a particular state for when the engine is turned on. IE sport button default changed to user preference. MINI says NO. Where are the hackers?

Get in, put on the seatbelt, start the car, push the sport button and put it in gear. Is there any other way?
