R56 Fan running in MCS after a drive??
Fan running in MCS after a drive??
Just wondering if this is normal... After almost every drive the fan comes on for about 30 seconds when the car is parked. Is anyone else's MCS doing this? Is that normal? Or do I possibly have an over active temp sensor/fan?
Cooling the turbo, I bet.
If you really look close, you may also discover that that electical whirring noise isn't a fan at all (or at least not JUST a fan) but an electic water pump that's continuing to circulate coolant through the turbo unit. Basically a built-in turbo timer.
Don't worry.

Most modern cars have electric fans that run after the car is shut off.
Whether it's normal or not depends on what the weather is like in your area. If it's warm/hot... no issues. If you have still have snow on the ground, let the dealer know.

Mine does this as well. I believe what we are hearing is the water pump. It's my understanding that the water pump runs on demand as opposed to continuously as in most vehicles. This was done to save drag on the engine (and consequently lower fuel consumption). Presumably it'll save some wear and tear on the water pump, too.
Yes, The noise you are hearing on key off is the electric water pump. BMW / MINI has gone to this design in alot of the newer product line for a few reasons. The original reason for going to the electric pump was to help get the motor to operating temps quicker since a cold engine needs more fuel and with all of the gov't regulations BMW / MINI had to come up with ways to save 1% here, .5% here to lower fuel useage. With the new R56 and also the E90/91/92/93 335i sedans both being turbo'd cars the added cooling provided to the turbo when the car is shut down will greatly prolong the life of the turbo itself.
Over and above the coolant circulating for the turbo the actual radiator fan will also turn on after shutting off the car. This has been common on the 02, 05, and 07.
yup, The pump always runs but is fairly quiet. Sometimes the fan runs and it is much louder. There is no way to mistake the two.
If I'm understanding this correctly (I'm not a car person), this is normal for the turbo charged MCS. But what about the MC? I'm getting the fan running after I turn off the car on my MC, but not all the time. Normal for MC as well?
