Jealous Car

Has anyone else had this happen? Soon as I order a new car, my present car starts acting up, or, contrarily, some problem it had mysteriously fixes itself. I have bought quite a few new cars and always seems to happen. Maybe they know???

I hope my present car doesn't start acting up ...I'm giving it to my daughter who will be getting her license next month. I need that car to be trouble free so I can spend even more money on my MINI.

There was a hilarious NPR Car Talk call recently where someone had an old car and was going to replace a part and worried if doing so might cause other parts to fail. They suggested installing a used part, in the dead of night, so the other parts wont feel jealous and revolt.

Maybe when we go shop, we should drive someone else's car?

We also have a classic '64 Porsche. One day we, and a group of friends, went on a long cruise. At lunchtime the conversation was on problems these cars present, and naturally they were all listening. This time it was ours that malfunctioned--we limped home 80 miles and were towed the last 10.

It's not the first time this has happened. They do hear--I'm convinced of it!

I've had issues with the battery dying in my MINI if it sits for a few days. I recently got an Optima to replace the stock battery but have not had a chance to swap it in. In the meantime, the MINI sat for well over a week. Yesterday I had to use the MINI since my other car acquired a damaged rim and tire from a nasty pothole and I was not in the mood to use the truck. I told myself if the car would start, I'd take it to work today. It fired right up. It KNOWS that battery is waiting to go in, and is playing games with me.

Oh yeah. And the Mini has caused a great rift in the family. In years past, my old cars would get finicky, even childish about being replaced.

But the old Volvo decided to throw down a full ranting fit! The day we were driving back from the test drive of the new Mini, the Volvo decided to blow her oil filter off. Now, on the freeway at 75MPH is not a good time to have an oil filter fly off an engine.

Of course, it takes me about 10 seconds (hey, I'm an old guy) to realize what has happened, but it only took 9 seconds for the 127,000 mile ridden engine to seize up, throw a rod, and have a piston rudely attempt exit through the head.

Fortunately, aside from the car damage, and the damage to my wallet, no one was physically injured. Although the mental anguish was reaching eruption levels Krakatoa would have been loathe to match.

talking abou this... I am driving back from the dealership last night and the clutch of my current car suddenly decides to stop working! left me stranded on an exit ramp... not only that but my phone decides to go dead too, so had to spend some time walking around till I found help at a hotel. thank god I was almost all the way out of the highway and on a busy street cause otherwise I don't know what I would have done!

I don't know if this was the car being jealous or some power above telling me to get on with it and buy the freaking car once and for all!

from now on my car will always have the emergency service #, a car charger and an extra pair of hat and gloves in winter...

Picked up a large screw in my front tire on my Ranger yesterday. This morning my battery was dead. What the heck is going on.!! He must know that his replacement will be coming in a couple of months.

So I'm not the only one! It was actually BEFORE we started talking about a new car that the battery died one day because the fan kept cycling on all day one day while I was at work. That was what spurred us (since we'd just had the damned thing serviced) to start looking for a new car in earnest.

Well, the Passat must know its days are numbered because it did the same thing again yesterday (fortunately that part itself should be under warranty since it was just replaced 2 months ago), except this time, after the jump, the engine wouldn't run without giving it constant gas and had to be towed. I almost kicked it this morning I was so mad at it! Saying it's a good thing we're getting rid of you...should have done it sooner...just you wait until MINI gets here!

I ordered my MINI last week and now magically my Jeep's MPG has improved 15% on the last tank. I think she knows we won't be spending as much time together soon. Anyhow, no complaints on the improved fuel efficiency, just an interesting occurence

Two years after I moved to the States my mother decided to sell Gigetta, my beloved MK4 - three times she went out to bring it to a dealer and three times the car would not start... Each time my father went out the next day to check it out and get it towed to see what was wrong and it would start right away.

Eventually, it was given to my cousin who enjoyed for several years with no problems at all. We decided that it had become part of the family and did not want to be too far apart from us.

A day or two after I ordered the MINI, I was getting into my current car, and went to put the laptop in the passenger side footwell. As I reached over, I caught the edge of the interior light and ripped 1/2 my thumbnail off. I think my Lexus bit me.

My 1990 Integra started having dead batteries after I got the MCS. Gee, do you suppose it might have had something to with my not driving it much?

Now that the MCS is in the shop, the Integra runs fine.

Must be something with Integras, mine sounds like it's got a bad wheel bearing, the CV boot is torn i think, the recently replaced water pump is making a whining noise, and my front left tire keeps going down. All of this started in the past week.

funny you should mention it.

within two days of hearing from my dealer that my mini's been built and awaiting transport, my current car's muffler decided to fall off...

the mini delivery should be at the exact same time that my current car's due for inspection. talk about dodging the bullet...

We don't give our cars the chance to get jealous:

'63 Saab KIA May '72
'66 Ford Custom 500 fatal seizure July '74
'74 Fiat 128 KIA March '80
'77 Fiat 131 POS finally gave up ghost in '83
'83 Nissan Wagon KIA Jan '91
'85 Chevy Wagon brake suicide Summer '94
'85 Sentra stolen July '04
'94 Volvo Wagon KIA March '07

I've vowed to go down with my MINI in the event of a catastrophe.

On the other hand, my 68 Cougar is running like a champ! She knows she's a part of the family (belonged to my aunt before me - just us two owners).

The day I picked up my Mini I had to move my Miata to my brother's extra parking spot in the city. The Miata threw a fit...the rad started leaking and the left pop-up headlight actuator jammed.

Anyway, I told my brother to sell it for me but he could "adopt" the car for now. Unfortunately, being summer and all, I think he's doing a lousy job selling it.
