R56 noise/moonroof closed: quality control?
Sorry to hear that - mine is back in tomorrow so I will report the outcome.. I don't think this is a design flaw as I have heard many people talking about how impressed they are at how noiseless their R56 sunroof is, shame we aren't one of them
Hi again - just picked my car up and they seem to have fixed the problem, 'seem' being the word.. Did a motorway run and I couldn't hear any rattling sounds or wind noise, opening and closing it a few times to make sure it stayed the same..
Apparently they replaced the roller bars (although the guy at servicing doesn't know much) but in general they have now replaced all the parts that make up the sunroof apart from the glass itself..
I'll report back in a few days to let you know if the noises have returned..

While driving I am still aware that my car does not have a fixed roof. On the other hand, it doesn't sound like I am going 100mph when I am going 10mph. There is now an impression of solidity and quality that the noise destroyed before.
It's been two days since visit number two for me and the fix IS HOLDING. In my case I was told that the roof was installed asymmetrically. IE the gap on the left was too large and the gap on the right too small. The dealer "squared" it up.

Another week three build here.... Mine was adjusted and is certainly quietER, but not silent after it hits 70mph and above. With music playing I don't notice at all, but w/ windows and sunroof closed, and music off, I hear a highpitch wind noise. It isn't a constant sound, so I wonder if outside wind is in play here. SHOULD it be silent? I've never had a sunroof before. I'd probably bring it in until they fix it, but the dealer is an hour away, traffic is a drag, blah blah blah...
Is it completely silent or is it like Daffs and mine. I'm thinking if I take it back again they may make it worse.
Good News!!
We got the Mini back today. Easy fix, lets see if it'll last.
If you look at the rails, there are 3 bolts on each side, left and right. All they did was loosen the bolts, push the glass up and foward just a bit and retightened the bolts. You can now see where the factory initially tightened the bolts and now where the technician retightened the bolts in the new position. No more wind noise. They did this for the front and rear.

Sounds like it might be a DIY!
Ok I haven't really been far since it was 'fixed' so can't report anything yet.. I have however noticed today that the guy that was working on my roof obviously had a zip or buckle on his clothes which has scratched my paintwork!
There are about five or six small scratches near the top of the passenger door
Will go to my dealership on Monday. Just can't believe this, I wanted to keep my paintwork perfect - it's less than 8 weeks old! Whatever they do to remove the scratches it's unlikely to be perfect..

DIY?
Does this look like a DIY job for those of us who have the noise issue?
I wish someone could post pics & "instructions". What kind of fastener is it?
(size, tools needed?)
Hope this does the trick. Thanks to everyone for keeping up the fight.
I am tired of the racket myself.

What does the sunroof look like now from the outside compared to before? I assume the bolt adjustment you mentioned pushed the glass up and forward a bit. How does the sunroof fit the roof now? Is it flush, above or below the roof line after the adjustment and on which panels?
Thanks
Thanks

From both this thread and the noisy roof that was on the demo I drove, I will not be ordering the moon roof. I was undecided until hearing of multiple complaints. And has been stated before, if a dealership can't provide a demo without wind noise, I don't want to waste my time with possible repeated trips back and forth to get adjustments.
Since the fix, it's been about 2 weeks for me too. It's holding. The noise used to emanate mainly from the left side. After the fix, the left side is quiet, but there is still some noise from the right. I wouldn't care if I hadn't been sensitized to it by the initial noise.
After reading the thread and examining the roof carefully, I see that the right side is a little below the metal roof-line, whereas the left side sticks up about 1mm. This suggests that fiddling with the screws and positioning the roof properly is what is needed. Why it has taken the dealers so long to figure that out? Is this answer much too simple?
I am sorely tempted to get out the screwdriver and fiddle for fine-tuning, but also to understand the aerodynamics and flute-playing effect of the thing.
