R56 noise/moonroof closed: quality control?
At my MA's urging I took my car into the dealer to have the moonroof adjusted. I was told the problem was solved. Driving back to work from the dealership the sound was identical to before. The dealer says he will file a PuMA report. Evidently this lets MINI engineering know that a customer has an issue.
All my avowals that it appears that replacing the seals worked were pushed aside as "internet chatter".

It's been windy here the last few days. The noise is horrible on those days. It starts at about 20mph on a windy day. This morning driving to work, I could barely hear the radio over the noise. I opened the roof to make it quieter.
I will report back when I get the car back next week.
I actually heard back the very next day. BMW responded. They want the dealer to remove the moonroof and measure gaps and the rubber seals etc. I am taking the car in this coming Tuesday. They said they will keep the car for a few days. I am getting a loaner. They are certainly trying.

My MCS roof is quiet to about 75mph. After that, you get a soft rushing noise that gets louder as you approach 100mph. Never-the-less, the roof is quieter than in my 2002 Cooper. When the roof is tipped up for ventilation, it doesn't rattle (yeah! the old one always did)
I drove 3 different 2007 MCS test cars at local dealers: 2 had noisy moonroofs.
When fully closed, re-opend & closed again, roofs will not seal/close fully. Wind noise starts at 24mph increasing in amplitude all the way to highway speeds. Loud enough to drown out the turbo engine notes & make for an uncomfortable driving experience.
-Dealer(s) acknowledge issues, several in the staff note the same problem.
-Cars are sent to service, roofs "adjusted", noise goes away but returns as soon as the roofs are opened & shut again.
-Dealer from out of state emails w/ same observations.
-Several Mini staffers in Arizona note same moonroof noise issues.
Is this something Mini is aware of? Service bulletins?
-Serious deal breaker from my point of view: 2x former Mini MCS owner seeking new car but hesitant to purchase unit w/ moonroof.

Took mine in yesterday to get a runflat slow leak fixed (yes, you can easily drive on one flat... did so for 20 miles to the dealer), and was told by the MA that they've gotten a few complaints about the sunroofs and are now able to fix them with an adjustment. We'll see when I get it back. I'll report on it.

As I understand it, a PuMA report (I am not sure of the caps) is a BMW acronym (don't know what it stands for, can guess?) for a form filed back to BMW engineers suggesting that there seems to be a customer issue that is not resolvable at at the dealership.
Well, they said they'll replace the seals and if that doesn't work they will install a wind deflector!! Ah....no. I'll let them replace the seals and see what happens later, but no deflector, those things look awful!
mine starts around 40 or so. aggrivating. they even said they adjusted it the last time it was in for stripes...nothing changed.
biggest complaint about the car is the wind noise. I was hoping mine would not have it, but it does.
sometimes i crack the sunroof in the vent position..it actually is a little better or at least logical.

They adjusted the fit of the sunroof, no replacement of seals, and so far it's remained quiet. Not entirely silent, but what I'd call more than acceptable. Hopefully it will stay this way after repeated opening/closings.
*on the punctured runflat, they patched it, and I was charged 60 smackers. ouch!

Ok i'm back for an update.. Sadly after the roof remaining almost silent for about a day things went wrong again. The sunroof started rattling, a problem the dealer had obviously caused by not contacting MINI before trying to fix the sunroof (apparently I am the only person that has this problem with their sunroof).. As well as the rattle the wind noise seems to be returning..
So the MINI went back in and they kept it overnight - next day I went back and they said they had failed to resolve the problem. They would send what is the equivalent of a PUMA report while in the mean time replacing every single part that makes up the sunroof, personally i'd rather they got the answer from MINI first! So that's it up to this point, will let you know what happens this week when the parts are in.
I'd just like to say apart from that I haven't had any other problems with my R56 and love it to bits

Mines been fixed again and I just picked the car up. On both occasions the tech confirmed the excessive wind noise before attempting to fix it. Unfortunately due to traffic on the I680 i couldn't get above 50mph on the way home. I'll check it tomorrow ans report back.
tension.....
After 2500 miles I have found a very consistent pattern:
-Open & reclose moonroof (only needs to be cracked open a tad & then reclosed.)
-Noise is acceptable (still a bit too much IMO.)
-20 miles later, noise rises in volume at all speeds, road surfaces & driving conditions.
-Open moonroof slightly & reclose (reseal) Noise goes away for another 20 or so miles. Aso on ad infinitum.
Problem: the front roof pane will not stay tightly closed because it looses tension.
What is the mechanism that holds the moonroof in place, under tension (gear, cable???)
I would prefer a hand crank that actually has the mechanical strength w/ an old fashion tension latch. This would solve the problem.
IMO it is NOT a seal issue, it is indeed the mechanical tensioner.
Get it together Mini!!!

So far (only two highway exits since I picked up the car) it was a lot quieter. It is fairly windy today which normally accentuates the wind roar, and the noise level on this short drive was OK. Given the thread above, I will have to see whether the fix lasts more than a short while. I will report back.
While the roof was being adjusted, I was given a R53 loaner with no moonroof. It was sepulchrally quiet next to my car, and we know the r53 is not Lexus-quiet.
I have the same issue. it starts around 45-50mph. it's a design flaw. I am convinced. They adjusted it once already..I think we are all just going to have to live with it until they come up with a true "fix"
not good mini. not good at all.
not good mini. not good at all.
I test drove one last night and it didn't have any issues. I opened and closed the sunroofs several times. I talked to the MA about it and he said they had one demo car that exhibited similiar issues to what I explained but they have not had any customers complain. He assured me that MINI takes care of their customers and that since I told him about all the people on NAMA talking about the problem he's sure it is something that MINI will address and fix. I ordered my R56 last night, with the premium package, so I'm crossing my fingers.
So I tested my fixed sunroof today and guess what? yep, its still as noisy as ever. I've no idea what these techs are smoking, but its affecting their hearing as well. So back to the dealer next week again, then I'm going to pursue having the car lemoned and will buy one without the sunroof.
