Breaking the rear loose

Just a question from a curious R53 owner. I just watched episode 2 of "Hammer & Coop" on Motoringfile, and noticed in the tight alleys, they were trying to give the appearance of drifting by breaking the back end loose and around during some tight turns.

When it comes to Mini's & stunt driving, I've seen a clip here and there, and the Italian Job obviously... But I'm thinking that the Mini in the video wasn't a stock 2007 MCS. Anyone care to enlighten me as to why or why not though?

you don't think they just used the parking brake?

I saw some stills of the making of Hammer and Coop on Motoringfile several months ago. They didn't know what it was yet, but someone smuggled the shots out. They showed they had an R53 being doctored up to look like an R56 for some of the shots. MINI body double.

Yep, but some of the things I think they used the R53 for was to run into the glass etc.

Granted it has Racing Dynamic lower springs and bigger rear sway but rest is still stock and no ebrake was used. All done with Throttle control and sellection of tires

When it comes to Mini/MINI stunt driving there is none better than the world famous Russ Swift. He has entire routines with the moves that you've described. Minis, MINIs, R56, R-whatever...Russ is da man!!!

With enough speed...

...and a stiff rear sway bar, and freshly rotated tires, it's not hard to get into a drift.

Holding it around a whole corner while smoking the tires is another thing.

So the consensus is that it wasn't a stock 07 MCS?

not the consensus at all. the e-brake can make any car's back end come around pretty easily. you don't need anything special to do that.

The consensus - it was clear they did the turns with the R56. They used an R53 on the stunts where the car might be damaged.

Mugami mentioned lowered springs and a sway bar, but he is probably referring to the car in the photos he posted.

clear now?

I'm wondering if you guys watched the video, and are referencing the same turns I'm referencing.

Handbrake turns and "the Scandanavian Flick" are fun... but I REALLY liked the J-Turn performed in the alleyway.

That's probably the most impressive manuver in the video as it's ALL done with weight transfer, You're really tossing the car around (BACKWARDS) and working the gears under some disorienting circumstances.

Timing and coordingation are critical... not to mention that alley is about as tight as it gets. Perfect.

I was the one that took the spy shots and remembered that Rhys was using the hand brake for the right angle turns in the alley. I just looked at the video again and you can see and hear the rear brakes locking up each time .

Great driving!

However I'm confused..

That's not how I remember Bohemian Rhapsody sounding. Perhaps there is more than 1 version.

Also, the description said the name of the driver was Russ - she didn't look like a russ to me.

Yes there is... but no, it's not. Confused ?

Thant's Queen allright, but not "Bohemian Rhapsody". It's actually "Don't Stop Me Now" off of the album, Jazz.

...and Yes, that IS Russ driving... not the female PASSENGER, Ilsa... look again, it's a RIGHT HAND DRVE CAR !!!

hmm my brand new 07 S with the stock rolly polly 16's has crazy
oversteer. Its like driving my cobra, getting the backend to
hang out is super easy. Im expecting some better performance, lower profile
tires, to trim that down a bit.

But I can swing the back end out with ease on the 195/55's this thing came with. The rear gives out long before the front end tries to plow.
