R56 Oxygen blue different in UK and USA configurator
Oxygen blue different in UK and USA configurator
I ordered an oxygen blue/white MC today, but I'm still somewhat unsure of the exact color. The UK configurator looks to me like "robin's egg blue", and the USA configurator looks a lot darker. They don't appear to be the same color. Does anyone know which configurator is more accurate?
Thank you!
Thank you!
Well, if this other thread is correct, it's closer to the US site blue, and it's gorgeous:

I saw a paint sample of the Oxygen Blue at my dealer last week. It was gorgeous, like a slightly deeper robin's egg blue. I liked it so much that I went back to the configurator and built an Oxygen Blue MC (I'm ordering a CR/W MCS) just in case.
Yes, if you can go to the dealer they have a real-life sample of the new colors....along with other interior finishes that are hard to get an exact read on in the configurator. There is a lesson here: 1) it is impossible to critically assess color on the web (you can get a close, general idea, but that's about all you can expect), and 2) it is impossible to get an accurate representation of a three dimensional object/reality in 2 dimensions (like a picture). Trust me, we have tried valiantly to do both with R56. This is why there are now so many fans of Sparkling Silver (and other colors) and of R56 among those who have seen them in person.
I'm going with Oxygen Blue, too. I like it because:
1) I'm ready for a lighter color (after yummy IB)
2) It will offer good contrast both with white trim (roof/mirrors) and with black wheel arches and other black trim
3) it's non-metallic
4) less need for exterior chrome package with lighter colors, imo
5) darn close to my all-time favorite classic Mini color
Very excited here!!

Speaking of Sparkling Silver... Why is it absent from the USA configurator?

Edited to add: The sparkling silver is back on the configurator.
Dealers have the color swatches for OB. I held the swatch up to a CR/W Cooper in the showroom. It is not nearly as bright as that original photo of the swatches that was floating around. It is going to be a very retro/classic british type of color.
jmelrose, even that picture of the swatches is not right. The Oxygen Blue in the picture is darker than the actual OB. The yellow is not even close.
The new Nightfire Red is actually a bit darker and a tad more brown than in the photo.
Ok, all of them are off. It looks like heavy flourescent lighting was the major influence in the color along with a clear blue sky outside. There is a definate blue influence in all the colors.
The picture of the MC in my sig is from the configurator, and is "Nightfire Red". Of course, it has been shrunk and GIF'd to all heck so it ain't even close anymore.

Color on a computer screen will never look totally correct. Monitor gamma levels and other computer-specific settings prevent it from happening. Even going from a Mac to a PC the gamma levels are set much differently, so a correctly color-balanced image on one computer will be darker/lighter on someone else's.
However, it does give an idea. And without seeing it in person, an idea is the best anyone can hope to get through a web browser. I pass this image along only to give an idea as to how O2 Blue compares to Lightning or Laser.
Apple's Colorsync technology helps standardize colors across platforms, and I'm sure there's a Windows equivilent, but so few people take the time to set it up for their monitor that unless you're a pro working with images professionally, you're likely multiple shades off from reality in many of the images you see. Heck, my laptop at work is hooked up to a projector, and the LCD screen can be waaay off from what the projector displays, and no amount of tinkering I've done seems able to get the two to match up.
And, yes, the additional factor of the lighting and other environmental images certainly impact the final image as well. The Redwood Lounge Leather color is a testament to how much variation there can be in one color alone.

. Does anyone know if OB is scheduled to start production, week 9 or 10?Edited to add: the Nightfire Red looks awesome!
Definately a lighter shade of the same color Rennie (and the Nightfire Red is very cool. My Coop!)
jmelrose, I work for a game company. All my monitors are professionally calibrated. Just FYI. And you are correct. There is no way for a picture to be accurate on a computer. The camera is the first place things go wrong. And it is downhill after that.
The picture you posted shows where the issues are at. The reflections show a room with a lot of glass and what appears to be a clear day. This means the color is going to be enhanced with blue. Also, take a look at the chili red. There appears to be a large blue wall in the reflection. Then add the flourescent lights and you cannot help but get a blue weighting in the image.
It cannot be helped. The only way to take an accurate picture would be in direct sunlight, or in a controlled lighting situation. even then, you are at the mercy of the computer which processes it, to some degree.
