Bummer... R56 NOT at LA AutoShow...

Hi all,

I just got back from LA Auto Show Press Days and the R56 is NOT there...
Even though I flashed some BMW credentials the only thing the people on the MINI stand could say was that while it had been planned to have it premiere here, something apparently came up and its North American debut has been pushed back to the Detroit Auto Show in January.

Oh well...

FWIW, MotoringFile reported that the R56 wasn't going to be at the L.A. show back in september.

Someone on another thread reported the R56 debut at the SF auto show, to which I replied that SF and any other western market auto show was bush-league compared to Detroit and MINI would accept nothing less than the big dogs. Moral: It'll always be Detroit (or maybe New York), folks.

Not for long, I think L.A. will really step up, since the city is a mecca for all cars "cool".

Doubtful. There are forces in the autoshow biz that us mere mortals will never comprehend, and those forces eminate from Motor City USA....

I know Detroit in THE show for North America, but that makes no sense at all. The car was already revealed at the last major show in Paris. So now, LA is being skipped and gets old models on display ?!
It's so dumb, I'll never understand, California is by far the biggest market for cars and the LA show is still treated as red-hair step child.

I didn't know either the North American premier was postponed for Detroit and was quite disappointed upon arriving at the MINI stand in LA.

Fricking bean counters

Cool. I'll get to see it in Detroit then. LA is a bit of a drive for me, but I usually try to make the NAIAS in Detroit on opening day with some other car buddies of mine.

Hey, LA is an up-and-coming car show and they finally admitted that it might not be great to go head-to-head with NAIAS. They didn't do a great job with security this year (no bag searches and they let the clowns get on stage and interrupt Wagoner's speech) but it'll grow every year. Detroit will still be the big daddy but unless they do something about Cobo it'll fade a little bit every year. I think that we might see some recognition of this fact from the local governments, but by the time they address it, Chicago and New York will be even bigger than they are right now...

LA Auto Show & MINI USA Suck!

Yesterday I went to LA Auto Show. My targets were: the new MINI, Audi R8, and hoped to see cool concepts from around the World (since the show was organized a month earlier than it usually was).

Instead I found it filled with crap as usually and NO NEW MINI. Can you imagine? They started selling the car and will ship in about 2 months and they don't display it at - I assume - the largest import car market in North America. What's the point of advertising the old model? Is it too expensive to bring over couple new ones? Even if it is, they must: the LA area has the most concentration of MINI dealerships.

It would be waste of time and money, if no Audi R8: a great addition to my garage, or maybe Gallardo (one day)?!

Hiya Yegor,

Yeah I was similarly disappointed. Although I did get a chance to see the JCW carbon fibre boot handle. That was nice. And a note to MINIUSA, I would have purchased that @ the show if you let me. Is there some type of ban on the manufactuurers actaully doing some sales there? Is that to protect the dealers....hmmm, sorry I am just thinking while I type....might have just answered my own gripe.... HEHEHEHEHE.....

Yeah R8, woohoo, Spyker F1 car, nifty, Lotus Elsie, neato again....sorry but for me the big thing to see @ the show was the Hydrogen 7. HOLY CRAP!!!! If BMW can figure out a way to get that vehicle to market, we are in for some interesting times. Personally, I would love to see more and more options for filling up my vehicle. Whether it be stinky biodiesel from hash browns I ate that morning, or Hydrogen I purchase from my local fuel guy. Don't care, jsut want some more options.

There is a ban

Most if not all auto shows ban the sale of cars at the show. Most booths are run by several differnent dealers at the same time, so for equity to all No sales. Some will give cards and set appointments though.

Hmmm I wonder if they'll have the R56 at the Washington Auto Show which is just after the Detroit show!! :-) I work at the Convention Center so I get to check out the cars ahead of time!
