'06 MCS here.. delivered in Dec. '05 for my wife. Thinking I want one now but with the JCW pkg. Since Jet Blk is not an '06 option I'll be going with the PS this time.

I will go ahead with one of the last few '06's to be built. I just like the look of the front end better than any spy pics I have seen of the 2007. As far as the Turbo vs. the Supercharger....who knows....I'm no mechanic , but I don't plan on keeping the new JCW stock for more than a week anyway ..and it may be some time before all the "quirks" get worked out in the new model and mods for the '07 will probably be slow in their release......after driving my wifes...AND MAN IS IT FUN....I want to try to push that 300 HP mark.....more fun....right??....anyway

MINI may prove me wrong but in all the cars I've owned, the last year model of an "era" of vehicle is much more desireable and holds better value later than the newcomers do....IMO!

My 2 Cents!....and probably not woth that much come to think of it

I have purchased my '05 last summer. If history is any indication, all the potential bugs in the 2nd generation cars should be worked out by the time I pay off my Cooper S. Hopefully the resale on the first generation cars will still by strong.

Another scenario would be the BMW 1 series

I bought a 64 Corvair Spyder new in 64 with a turbo. How long does it take for a technology to be proved? I had no problems at all with the engine/turbo in 64 and there have been a lot of improvements since then in turbo technology.

resmini,
it is not a question of whether turbochargers are proven technology. They were used on figheter aircraft long before you bought your Corvair. It is really about a new product design Vs. an older proven design. When BMW/Mini produces the turbo Mini it will be the first time. I need the car for work so it must be reliable - all the time and with no guess work.

Not saying all new model designs are newly produced models are bad. You had good fortune with your Corvair. Ha, I know a guy that had no problems with a Peugeot sedan! But hey, if you want to buy a new auto and possbily suffer the ills of new product design woes, don't let me stop you.

I always enjoyed being one of the first. The only time I regretted it was when I bought a Chevy Vega...it rusted on the way home from the dealer. In the case of MINI I just don't see why so many people are so sure the 07 is going to have an inordinate amount of problems. Most of the people I know that bought the 02's were very happy with them, and the problems were relatively few and in no way diminished their enjoyment of the MINI. My 03 has been close to perfect so far.

There will always be the exception, but exceptions have occurred with the 05's and 06's also.

I'd buy a new model Honda or Toyota, or even a GM product with no qualms, and I don't think the new MINI will be especially problematic either.

depends on timing...

My wife wants a cabrio, but we can't afford it right now. But if things change and the cash flow improves, we'll order her a car.....

But then, if it's an 07 model, I'll get to tinker with both types of engine.

For first year blues, I say the hell with it! I got an Acura MDX when it was new, no big problems yet.... And I got an 02 MCS that has been beaten silly, and just keeps going... While the 02/03s have a rep for issues, I still see threads on new issues that come up in the newer years as well....

Virtual prototyping has come a long way... the 777 aircraft was assembled in hyperspace before any parts were ever made! So much is now found and corrected in the design stage that the risks in first production years is much smaller than it used to be...

Ordered full JCW about 3 weeks ago. I like the current model and decided to buy one and keep for long-long time :-)

Hello all, I am a new member.

I joined the forums here because of the news of a turbo aluminum block mini motor. I have been shopping for a car for a while now, and am very close to buying a GTI or A3. While looking about the web I learned of the new mini motor, it's direct injection and turbo, now suddenly, the water is muddy.

I am not sure I want to wait until March to buy my next car.

My attraction to the GTI/A3 is the direct injection 2.0 turbo. The motor exhibits no lag, has tons of power and torque while getting reasonable mileage. It appears that the technology of the new mini motor is very similar. I love the GTI and A3's interiors, but both cars are a little porky. It appears the mini is growing very modestly and with an aluminum block instead of the existing Iron block, might even lose some weight.

Am I going 4 it? Maybe. I can't wait to get more information to help with the decision.

It is going to be losing some weight according to Gabe which is welcome news to me as well. It should make an already excellent handling car even better.

A friend of mine has an A3 and another a new GTI. I've driven both and they're both nice cars but I like even the current generation MINI more. There is just something about a MINI that words can't describe. Check out motoringfile.com for more info on the R56
