Anyone successfully program a new key?

Hi, Have one working key, second key case is damaged (silver ring broken) but circuit board might be questionable also since it went through wash (years ago) and it took several tries to clean the circuit board and get it working reliably at that time.
It works when I hold the case tightly so the button contacts work but sometimes alarm goes off.

So i could get a new case and transfer circuit board or new fob with new circuit board.
One vendor on ebay claims unit is brand new with new circuit board. Its a knockoff though as battery cover is different and reviewers say original circuit board wont fit.
In the case of new key it seems that you can program the new key just by inserting into the ignition although this is hard to believe - R56 Programming a new key - North American Motoring
Many reviews that say key needs to be programmed by Mini or auto locksmith but perhaps thats because they have no working key?

Anyone successfully program a new, second key and what was source for new key?

Thanks

I spent a ton of time looking into this, couldn’t come up with anything. I just gave up had a mobile locksmith come by the house. I had 1 OEM fob, paid $300 for two additional aftermarket fobs + programming.
