Remote key dead

My remote key is not working. I tried changing batteries. Nothing. Took it to the dealer and was told I might have to buy a new key. The new key is something like $200. BUT wait, that might not be the problem, he said. I might need a whole new set up and that's $400. What if I opt for the new key and it doesn't work -- Tough. Now, what's going on here? This is not an answer. Anyone else have an idea. I have a 2002. 54,000 miles. It is a battery-operated key.
Thanks friends --
Denise

did the dealer try to reprogram the key? mine was dead and found the way to reprogram the key on this forum , took me about 15 seconds and it was free. Worth a try. I'm pretty sure I remember the steps, PM me and I will try to talk you through it or do a search on reprogramming

Do you have two keys? Does the other one still work?

I got a brand new key shipped from BMW NA for my 2006 Mini S. The mechanical key will operate the ignition and start the car. But the remote does absolutely nothing.

Any ideas? I will search for the reprogram info.

Also, is there a way to make all doors and trunk open with one push on the remote as opposed to two?

Thanks

One of my keys stopped working, too, about 2 weeks ago. I guess I should bring it in.

Remember the keys changed. The 02 key, which is what I have, worked via a battery that could be removed. Later models had different kinds of keys. Since MINI could find nothing wrong with my key I've ordered a remote thingy. I was told it was only $20. Of course no one mentioned how much it was to install, but we'll see. - DeniseK

My key stopped unlocking my car the other day so I took it apart. The micro switch completely broke off of the circuit board! I thought I was going to have to buy another key.

I ended up fixing it myself. I put the switch where it goes and just touched my cold heat soldering iron to each side and there ya go. It works fine now.
