Programming a new key

When I picked up my new R56 the dealer was only able to find one key, so I left with one, and he shipped me a new one a week later.

When I received the key, I called my MA on how to get it programmed, and was told, on the new R56 models, all you need to do is insert the new key into the ignition slot, and the car will program the key.

While that worked pretty well, (I can lock/unlock/start the car), but I am unable to use the Comfort access system. Any ideas?

Did they send a regular key instead of a comfort access key? Does it have a panel in the back that opens to get access to the battery is it a sealed key?

Programming is pretty simple--owner's manual covers it well--but the keys are separate and need to be individually programmed to work the same.

I checked the two remotes, and they are identical, and both have removable batteries.

Re-read the owners manual, with no hints either. Does not say much about comfort access system.

Here is the old first generation method ..... thanks to Steve! You have an 07 .... so all bets are off. It can not hurt to try and report back to us.

You need to have all the keys with you when you get in the car.

1. Get in the car and shut the doors. (don't open any of the doors until you are complete.

2. Put a key in the ignition and turn it to the first click, then back and take the key out. (you have 5 seconds to perform the next step)

3. HOLD DOWN the unlock button, and press the lock button 3 times, then release the unlock button. The doors of the car should lock or unlock. Don't touch the doors or door locks.

4. Once the doors have locked/unlocked then just do step 3 with the other keys. Just hold down the unlock button, press the lock 3 times and release the unlock button.

5. Once you do this with all the keys then you can open the door or put a key in the ignition and the programming is ended.

6. Then try the lock and unlock on all the keys. If they don't work you can try it again.

for the comfort access keys, you need to bring them to the dealership so that they can program your code into the key via computer. When I worked at Nissan a year ago that was the case, and my buddy mentioned it was the same deal for Lexus.

The '07 FOB gets programmed by the car once you stick it in the ignition slot and start the car (so i'm told). The lock / unlock buttons on the FOB worked perfect. It's only the Black Buttons on the door Handles that are not working.

Sounds like a trip to the dealer.

There has to be some proocedure that mates the fob to the car. Otherwise, you could just walk up to any comfort access MINI and drive away.

Have you tried leaving the key in for awhile? Maybe it needs time recognize the fob, and link it to your car.

Hey I got my car at the same dealer you did. I got 2 keys when I picked it up. But the 2nd one didnt work. Drove and housr and 1/2 to the dealer and they "orderd" me another one.

SO are you saying I dont have to drive all the way there and have them program the newly orderd key? They can ship it to me and i put it in the ignition and itll program itself?

If it true sweet. But cant anyone order a key now and start your car if the break into it??

If you do not have comfort access, no need to go to the dealer. Just have them mail it. That's what they did for me.

I would assume so, since the only thing that is not working is the comfort access.

Any updates on this process?

Looking for info to program a fob to a 2007 MCS. Dealer provided two keys, one was fairly beat up. Purchased a unused one off eBay in perfect new condition but from another vehicle, I can swap in my existing blade, but can this new fob be programmed for use in my vehicle? Has anyone had luck doing a key rehab by installing a new shell on an old fob?

There is a reason they are so cheap on e-bay. They dont work.

Once the key has been programmed for one car it is not to be used on another car.

There is Nothing you can do to program it.

You may be able to take it to the dealer and have them program it up, It may or may not work depending on the fob. Some people have reported success but many many more have reported "it will not work" after the dealer has dealt with it.

Good Luck and let u know how it turns out.

Why are you programming it? It was the dealers mistake for not having the key when you bought the car. Take that **** back and have them do it instead of wasting your time.

Open it up and see what's inside. You'd have to transfer the coded smart chip for the ignition. The remote lock may require separate programming. It has been done successfully with a 1st generation key but I don't know about the 2nd gen key fob: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...for-cheap.html

The dealer has no responsibility here the customer got the two keys just did not like the looks of one of them so purchased another.

Attack Marshmallow:
rkw has a good idea if the second key that is beat up works swap the covers for the one that work and the one that does not then resell the one that does not work on e-bay.

Yup I got two keys one was fairly rough, and wanted to freshen it up. Purchased a year specific don in perfect condition, hoping to be able to program it to our car.

Got the key today. Opened vehicle with original key popped new fob in and got a key symbol with a slash through it. Left it in, pushed stop/start for 10 seconds, nada-no go. I'm thinking I may just swap cases and put my fobs guts into the new housing.

Unless of course someone knows of a working process to mate this fob to the vehicle. I'm not holding my breath though.
