I keep reading that the inner and outer axle joints take different grease because the inner tripod joint has needle bearings and the grease therefore needs to be thinner. The BMW parts for the replacement boot kits aren't specific about what grease they come with.
Both joint boot clamps/straps were loose and spitting grease so I need clean and refill and reclamp. I have Sta-lube CV joint grease but it doesn't mention use in tri-pod joints.
I have an OEM bellows repair kit in the garage, unused. I’ll try to get some pictures of the grease packages for you.
thanks brother.
I've read that the needle bearings in the inner tripod joint need NLGI No.1 grease (less viscous), the outer needs No. 2. I read the product sheet for Sta-Lube and it says its NLGI 1.5. Maybe they mean for it to be for both inner and outer?

I didn’t get a picture, but I remembered to check the axel grease from the bellows kit I have. Both of the grease packs are labeled the exact same, they just have different amounts of grease in them.

Thanks Mr. I assumed as much. I used the Sta-Lub for both. Likely I added way too much for tripod/inner. Since they give no grease quantity in the manual, one is left to guess.
I used these pliers to pre-tighten the inner/tripod bellows clamp a little tighter before using the special pliers to permanently clamp it. Which by the way is possible without taking the axle out of the transaxle. The crimper tool just barely fits in there to crimp the clamp.
