So it seems this is not an uncommon problem. we have a 2010 mini cooper and it just stopped running the other day. before it stopped, it was also doing some wei rd mechanical stuff, like the hatchback unlatching when you took out the key etc.and after it stopped running, when I tried to start, it would turn over when I pressed the start and keep turning even when I stopped pressing the start button.
So I took it to the dealer, and he told me the sunroof was leaking and soaked the interior. and ruined the passenger side footwell module or FRM2 (or 3). they quoted at least $3K to clean and dry out (I can do) and replace the module which they said will cost $500 for the part alone.
I spoke to a local repair shop, and they were familiar with the problem as well. they suggested finding a used FRM (I already did on ebay for just over $100), plugging it in (they said simple and takes 5 minutes) then try and start. if it does I will likely see lost of error codes but to go from there. they said they would program the FRM for me if I install for $125.
So my choice seems to be, let the dealer replace the FRM for $3K , and as they said no guarantee it will solve the problem. or write it off and it becomes a "donation" as they said. or take the smaller risk of a used FRM and re-program for what would be around $250-300.
does this sound right? any recommendations, or other solutions?
the car has high mileage and frankly not worth putting $3K in to. but I hate to think that I could replace, dry out, clear the sunroom drain and be in better shape.
