JB+ VS NM Power Module Review

I wanted to a quick review of my experience with the JB plug and play VS. the NM Power Module. If your not familiar with these mods they both are plug and play and "alter readings" to squeeze out a bit more power and boost. Both are undetectable and will not alert the dealership if you remove and drive for a minute before service. I had the JB module for about 5 years. I drove it in several elevations and overall it was good. I bought the NM unit just because and I wanted to go on a road trip to visit family in Camarillo, CA.

Over the years the JB unit was good. When I shipped my car to ATL the car was getting about 12+ psi boost and was fun to drive. When the car arrived in California the boost... just wasnt there. I talked to JB and even visited there location in Simi Valley. I never really figured out the dial. Results were good but seemed a bit, unpredictable. I never overboosted I just never had consistant boost levels on WOT. A/F readings never were too lean or rich. From my understanding on the R56 turn the dial all the way up. I don't have a dyno but logging on my phone showed around 300 hp crank. I decided to pull the unit because my car (which should be mechanically sound after my most recent rebuild) was NOT reaching 10 psi boost. I just have coil overs, AEM intake, Alta Spring and a Remus Module.

I drove about 70 miles in LA traffic as spirited as I could. By the time I reached the Neuspeed HQ in Camarillo by phone read a max of 9.2 boost psi....

I walked in and picked up my NM Power Module. I dig their lobby! Red VW Golf in the lobby and a framed article about a MINI. I installed the unit in about 3 mins and took her for a rip. Immediately, the boost shot up past 10psi! The driveability on the way home was stellar. No hickups or stutters. Traffic sucked so didn't get past 60 mph. The wastegate is a bit quieter. It seems to pull more above 4.5k and feels a bit more powerful. The Jb unit seemed to fall flat on WOT pulls beyond 3rd gear. No logs but I didn't get any audible warnings anything.

I believe I am on the 3+ psi mode. I found out there is another mode that is closer to 6+ psi. From my understanding the N18 can hold more than 15 reliably.

I am excited and will try the second stage soon!

Did you try any other settings?

I am considering one or the other right now. Not a big $$$ difference between the two.

The NM module looks like it plugs into two different sensors where the JB+ is the MAF only.

I tried the 2nd stage ( there are 2 settings) the second doesnt make more boost but it definately comes on quicker

Thanks for the comparison and feedback.

BTW, I am assuming you sold your JB+ on market place. If not, are you considering selling it? If I can find a used unit and try it, I would be more inclined. There was/is a JB+ on marketplace for $100 but the seller flaked out. Never replied to PM or posts.

If I go new, I am leaning towards the NM. Only hindrance is some threads made mention of going into a temp limp mode. It appears this was on early versions of the module and has been corrected.

Installed two weeks now. I have monitored boost and AFR on most long trips. My highest boost previously was 13.5, since installing the JB+ last night I saw 19.2 that was kind of a WOW moment. I didn't think it would do that much for the boost. It definitely makes a difference in lower RPM but also increased the wheel torque when getting on it. You have to hang on to that steering wheel or it will jerk you over.

I think with the increased boost my next two upgrades will be a larger intercooler and Forge diverter valve. I want to do something with the exhaust but nothing crazy. I don't want it sounding like what I call a "fart can" that a bunch of young kids put on their otherwise untouched little cars. I want a little deeper sound, I have heard that adding just the JCW muffler might do the trick or deleting the 2nd CAT. I would like to get my hands on used stock JCW exhaust and play with it.

I am glad you like the jb+. Its a good unit and serves its purpose! I had it installed for about 5 years with no hiccups.

If you haven't already check out the neuspeed exhaust. Its made for California sound and emissions but still adds a few hp. I plan on getting it. I just got the Alta DV kit but realized it uses the stock yellow O ring that is prone to failure. Can't get it without buying a new solenoid. Should have chose the Forge.

Enjoy!

interesting about the neuspeed exhaust. im in cali and i hate our smog check and emissions laws. Will check out the exhaust. I do love how quite my mini is right now with the stock cooper S exhaust... but with all my mods i feel like its a waste to NOT have an exhaust.

do have you a downpipe as well? Or no (because of smog)

CARB is a pain. I would love to get a downpipe but I don't want to fight another ticket. I may eventually and put on a real beefy resonator.

Glad I am in the Midwest!

I haven't removed anything from my stock exhaust but if/when I do, I have no concerns being in Ohio. My 2006 Chevy Duramax dually went catless and no muffler right around 35000 miles. 465000 on it now and glad I did it along with several other mods PCV delete, EGR delete and chipped.

I just want a bit more umph sound out of the exhaust when I romp on it. I do not want the young loud as **** sound. I drive from Ohio to Ft. McCoy, WI basically once a month. I do not want an exhaust that drives me batty from drone or volume for a 472 mile trip that takes anywhere from 7 hours 15 minutes to 10 hours 30 minutes to drive (Thank you very much Chicago)

My ideal setup would be a valve system like Armytrixs or a cutout. The first is way more expensive than I want to spend. The second would probably be considered a felony here.
