I just purchased an N18B16C out of a wrecked 2013 JCW. It appears to be as advertised and does have "N18B16C" stamped on the block. However, the installed turbocharger does not seem like it's correct, and I cannot get any of the part numbers to resolve as anything other than a Mini Cooper S turbocharger. In fact, it seems like the exact same turbo as my N18B16A. RealOEM seems to hint towards a JCW specific turbocharger with a part number of 11657649496 for this motor using the VIN this motor supposedly came out of. Perhaps someone savvy swapped the JCW turbo and manifold out for the lesser units before it got parted. Can anyone help me verify what's currently on the motor?

You re correct to be suspicious. The Borg Warner number 53039700163 is the N18 Cooper S turbo number, not JCW. The JCW turbo number should end with 0146 or 0298.
Thanks for the confirmation! And thanks for the tip about using the BW number on the BorgWarner site...don't know why I hadn't thought about that. Appreciate all the help.

As far as my research has seen, I thought the 0146 was used on N14 JCW, and the 0298 was the N18 JCW. But, I could be mistaken….
According to BorgWarner 0146 was never replaced by 0298 and they do coexist.
For example: When I type into the search the old Cooper S Turbo BW Number, it will show the old number and the new version of it, too.
53039700181 Old Cooper S BW number.
This does not apply to 0146.
Multiple Turbo pages + BorgWarner only show 218 HP engine for the 0298.
Did the 218 HP ones maybe had a different exhaust manifold?
So in theory, there should be some differences between 0146 and 0298..
I am convinced there are slight differences in the turbo itself, otherwise there wouldn't be a separate part number for the N18 version. The obvious differences between the N14 and N18 engines aside, a slight tweak to the turbo wouldn't be unexpected.
I can at least confirm,
that 0298 with the Highflow exhaust manifold (I think it is just the updated JCW one)
runs great on my N14 Cooper S without any Software changes.
