N18 Cold Start Noise

Posted this in the Clubman forum but not getting any response. Thought I would post here in the R56 forum as the drive train is the same and this forum gets more traffic. Any insight is appreciated.

I'm wondering if anybody here can help me with my noisy 2013 Clubman? I would like to know if this noise is normal or if I have a (potential) issue? 2013 Clubbie S with approximately 60k miles.

Noise is worse on cold start. When driving out of my neighborhood I get a raspy/rattling sound right before the upshift to a higher gear. Seems to be more noticeable on the 1-2 and 2-3 upshift but can be heard throughout the shift range. Noise occurs for about 5-10 minutes then mostly goes away. It will come back periodically after engine is warm but is not nearly as loud.

I took some video and posted it at the following link:

The noise can be heard at about 3 seconds, 8 seconds and is most noticeable from 18-23 seconds in the above linked video. Any insight would be beneficial.

Bumping this in hopes of some ideas.

I checked the exhaust etc. over the weekend and everything is tight so I don't think that is the source. Sounds to me it is coming from under the hood. I checked under the hood also and everything is tight. Could this be coming from the turbo?

I couldn't hear the noise over the sound of you hitting those speed bumps like they owed you money lol.

It also sounds like a loud "thump" when you brake to come to a stop. Have you checked the motor mounts? I wish I could pinpoint the noise you're asking about, but I'm totally missing it.

LOL, I don't normally pound the speed bumps but I wanted to keep the RPMs up. I think the thump you are hearing is a package loose in the back of the car.

If you turn up the volume between 18 and 23 seconds that's the best sound I could get. Sounds like a growl etc.

Unfortunately I did not check the motor mounts yesterday. I hope to get it back on the ramps soon to check.

Sounds to me like a heat shield or something like that….

That being said, you need to make friends with someone local that knows cars and can help diagnose noises. Sounds and rattles are near impossible to troubleshoot over the internet. I mean, the internet is a magical place, but not quite that magical.

I'll keep looking. What I need is a lift.

Mostly looking for ideas on what to check and (hopefully) for somebody to say "oh yeah, I've heard that before and this is what I did to fix it".
