Hey guys! Strange noise is coming from the engine compartment when vehicle in sport mode(heard a bit more when shifter in sport too) and I would accelerate (3K or more RPM), then would let my foot off the gas pedal quickly. The engine is increasing RPM when I apply gas. Could it be that when I take my foot off the gas quickly, this interrupts the speed of the turbo and makes that noise? It sounds like something is shaking/sound of a metal mesh. It is not continuous, just lasts a second or less. It happens every time I accelerate and abruptly take my foot off. I started noticing this few days ago, just came out of nowhere. I have included a sound file*. Start listening form 24 seconds and when you hear engine accelerate, then hear a stump. This is my foot off the gas and that "noise" is heard right after(almost at the same time) you hear the stump.

Wanted to know if any of you heard this or can try it.

Car: 2016 Mini Cooper S Auto Trans - no mods, low miles(21K) - already made service appointment.

* - I had to change sound file extension to mp3 as I couldn't attach it here. So change it back to m4a if you have issues playing back properly.

 

Does it still happen with your radio turned completely off. Yes, in sport and even more so in manual shift mode there is a fake engine noise (pop and gurgle) that is amplified thru the speakers. Some times my wife will make a comment about it and I laugh and say it is just the sound thru the speakers. They have had this fake engine noise for at least 5 years now. The dealer even acknowledged it with my 2019.

 

Are you talking about the same sound as in this video?
Completely normal if that is the case.

 

My radio was always in the same position with the song title displayed, but nothing is playing. My GTI had the fake noise in the cabin

Withe the MINI, the Pop and gargle I hear through the exhaust(not that loud to begin with) and that is a different sound. In that file which I uploaded, right after the stump, the sound of shaking metal mesh is heard(similar to Sh-sh). To me it may sound like the engine moving/shaking because I have interrupted the rpm

 

Not this noise for sure. I have never heard it before, just started to occur recently. I may also have an issue with one of the front struts.

The strut/shock issue is that it makes a pop sound when going over bigger bumps or when making a left turn at a faster speed. I just uploaded a suspension sound file. You will hear the suspension pop at exactly 7 seconds!
I could assume that the suspension noise is some how connected to that previous engine noise issue as these 2 issues I have noticed the same evening.

*Note - the engine noise issue only occurs in drive, not when the shifter is in P mode.

I went to the dealer, left the car for an inspection and got a loaner car: 2019 cooper s. This car seems to make the same noise as mine. Why that sound wasn't there before, as I do know that I was driving my car the same way and noise wasn't there.
