R56 All the strange noises my brand new R56 Cooper S N14 OEM motor makes.
Yep, they just get the extra from bmw group at a better price. ok, if its a problem, send it back, contact our people here for an exchange, We will take care of you. Somethings up with the wheel. We inspect things when they come back and inform BMW group all the time. They will note the batch orders.
Could be a small batch problem, I had no real issues with the OEM units in the past. My guess is a bad unit on the bearing. Let me know what brand you get on the next one.

This is the problem with putting on all new parts at once on an engine. You'd think they'd all work as intended and then something goes awry and you have to start chasing every part you just put on. FREAKING nightmare.
Everything is new. All peripherals are brand new, with exception of the harmonic balancer because it was $300 and its so easy to take off, I didn't wanna waste the money since I knew I could swap it easily at anytime.
That's a very logical question. I'm gonna do that next. Ill have someone raise RPM and I'll listen for it. (duh!)
I'm freaking out thinking about the flywheel being the cause. Having to R&R the flywheel would be a nightmare and hard to swallow considering I just paid for a transmission to be put in AFTER I put in the engine myself. Yes you read that correctly. Trans leaked endlessly right after I put in the new engine. I dont remember hearing that noise when the old trans was in, but it wasnt in for more than a couple dozen miles before I knew I needed a replacement trans.

Frick it, Im just gonna swap in a japanese motor...
Thats daring. I often thought the 1.6 to 2.0 honda motors would be cool, hopefully you live in a non emission state. I dont think there have been a ton of gen 2 mini foreign engine swaps, the packaging and fit may be hard, plus all the custom mounts, custom electric hook ups (may be easier just to completely replace the gauges), and needing to figure out a transmission that fits. Someone was doing a chevy swap a while back but not sure what happened to it.
Well I was just kidding. My engine is new. These are just teething pains...I hope.
The noise is much less pronounced with the original and very used friction wheel installed in place of the new Dayco unit, which the mechanic at mini assured me was not an OEM manufacturer. Why mine came in a BMW box is a question for ECS Tuning.. I ordered the Dayco unit because it was cheaper than the OEM unit but not super cheap and of dubious quality.
So I stopped by thet dealershipd and one of the mechanics looked at the car on the lift and can you believe it was making no noise at all. None. Zero. He said the friction wheel had no abnoemal movement. Then after it was off the lift it started making the 'rod knock' noise, albeit very faintly. It could only be heard inside the cabin. The mechanic said it sounded like the friction wheel from inside the cabin.
The water pump pulley looked almost new, according to him, so that's not the culprit. That was changed a few years ago on the old engine.
Anyway he said it wasn't a big deal. Nonetheless I'm not leaving that ancient friction wheel on there either way.
