Difference between 2012 and 2013 MCS

Been doing a fair bit of research on what would be my first Mini. Narrowed it down to the 2013 model year because it seems Mini finally addressed most of the carbon and timing guide issues by 2013. Was this also the case with the 2012 engine?

What are the differences between the two years because I'd like to expand my search to have a better chance of finding the color and mileage I'm looking for.

2012 and 2013 MCS share the same engine, it's only the JCW that got the updated N18 engine in 2013. S models have had the N18 since 2011. Otherwise not many differences: http://www.motoringfile.com/2012/06/...g-and-updates/

2011 was when they went from N14 to N18 engine in most applications. Some cars not til later years. They started to make changes as they went along and things like HPFP and other things started to change 2012 ish. I've seen talk that 2013 and beyond are more refined in changes/updates.

Your carbon/timing comments probably belong to the N14 vs N18 changeover.

Our 2011 N18 Countryman has no carbon issues at 65,000 miles.

The 2012 has 3 motors.
Early 2012 to May is the first generation N18 MCS
Mid 2012 and newer have the second. Generation N18 motor MCS

2012 JCW is N14

If build date is after May 2012, it has the same engine as 2013 and likely the safer bet?

As noted above, 2011 and later has the N18. In March of 2012 the HPFP changed to the newer more reliable version. Other than that I don't know of any changes.

The later N18 are the ones I own and they can take a beating, even with a larger turbo and tuned to 100hp over stock

I'm close to pulling the trigger on the 2013 MCS in Eclipse Grey with the external JCW kit. Silver JCW cross spoke challenge rims, so trying to decide if I go with silver stripes on the bonnet or black stripes and get the wheels powder coated black to match the stripes. Also next will be the JCW exhaust or another aftermarket exhaust.

You can't be too choosy with used cars so I think this is a suitable choice and I can have some fun modifying it.

Sounds like a nice looking car!

I think the JCW black with red pin stripes would look good.

I was thinking silver to match the wheels, but would consider other colors and getting the rims powder coated. I'm going to order some color samples today from a supplier. Anyone use houseofgraphx.com? Or any suggestions?
