R56 Hood Scoop Overlay installed w/o scoop beneath

Hi folks. I have a 2009 Mini Cooper S with a chrome hood scoop, and like many of you I've been through more hood scoops and overlays than I can count. I installed the factory heat shield and also got an aerogel blanket aftermarket Heat shield to cover the turbo. Still I got warping. I finally put a damn bolt right through the last overlay and hood scoop and pulled it flush with the hood. It had started to lift. Unfortunately I did this too late, the hood scoop overlay had already started to peel a bit and I didn't like the way it looked. I finally threw the towel in and decided that I would rather replace a $70 overlay than the entire hood scoop itself every time it warped.

I used enormous amounts of 3M automotive tape. I had to angle the scoop in such a way that the contact points on the overlay had something to grip onto. So it sits a little bit differently than the original hood scoop. I'm happy with how it looks however. I'm attaching photos in the hope it might help others. I'll keep you posted regarding how long it lasts. Thanks for reading!🙋
The weird little spots you see on the car and on the hood scoop are actually birds flying overhead.

Update and a tweak

Hi folks. Thanks for the kind words. I'm happy to report in all kinds of driving the hood scoop is still firmly attached. Weird thing I had a dream that it went flying off. Hahaha. Then since I couldn't leave well enough alone I decided to secure it further in case I wanted to go through the touch free Carwash to get winter salt off. So I made a hole in it and put a small screw through it, as I had done before in a prior post. Now the thing isn't going anywhere. The screw head is not very noticeable and I feel better about the whole thing. Plenty secure without the screw though. 3M tape works wonders. Most of all, I don't mind replacing a hood scoop overlay but the Scoops at nearly $400 a pop or getting ridiculous. I forgot to snap pics and it was getting dark anyway. I'll try to post some in case others are interested.

Photos after tweaking with screw and some retainer clips

Here are some photos after I took the car through the carwash. Some birds took revenge on me for some reason.😀

I just have to run by the hardware store and get a locking washer so that this doesn't loosen. I also bought some retaining clip type thingies; this was my original idea, but the ones I had were too short. There isn't much of a lip on the Chrome overlays because they're supposed to just sit on the original scoop with 3M tape. It's nice and secure now and no problem with the car wash. The little screw head is barely noticeable. I can live with it just fine. I wanted to put the screw hole behind the honeycomb, but the overlays have no lip because they're meant to sit on the original scoop
I attached these things on the lip inside the hood to help hold this down from another point on the hood scoop overlay

Unfortunately the screw hole that was already in the hood didn't line up with where I needed one, so I made my own😊

The weird things you see are reflections of the tree I was parked under

That works. But looks like a bird in the tree above your car
