R56 Hello all, bout to start a cooper build
Hello all, bout to start a cooper build
I have decided that Mini is the next build I want to do. I have had 2 R56's (MCS & JCWS) in the past and loved them both. I am starting at the first step and doing research, research and more research. Based on that I thought I would seek the group wisdom here. I am planning on doing an R56. I am combing through the forums and using the search option as much as possible, but thought I would ask your thoughts on problems, which model best to start with, is R56 the right mini to build.
Thanks all.
Thanks all.
N18 had a fuel pump change 2011/12. You can double check that easily on realoem.com when you have a VIN# or just go look for the part change. I believe the newer ones are less prone to failure, but not 100% sure on that.
Anyway, the earlier HPFP got an extended warranty in most cases, also something you can check with VIN# and local dealer to see if it would be covered.
Carbon with the N18 is rarely reported as an issue.

Whacha gonna build it to do --- track, straight-line, show-and-tell, sleeper, outrageous? This decision helps determine what's best to start with. I'm almost sorry I didn't start with a 1st gen model.

The N14 gets a bad rap because of the teething problems with the timing chain and HPFP. Get a cryo treated timing chain and change your oil every 5k miles and I doubt you'll have any timing chain issues. There were actually three versions of the Continental fuel pump used on the N14 and the latest version has proven pretty reliable.
The N18 motor if built is good to about 330 to 340 whp. Beyond that you need a higher lift, longer duration camshaft and that's not currently possible with the N18. The Bosch HPFP of the N18 does have the potential to be upgraded, so E85 with larger injectors MAY be an option down the road.

Track is the goal.. After a lot of reading I think I may go R53. The b16t4 seems like it is much more tunable and bit tougher. Still researching, but I am leaning more toward the R53.
