I have a Gen 2 Mini Cooper, and it's over revving. It happens when I accelerate hard in any gear, and the revs jump immediately from around 2,000 rpm to 5,000 rpm, and then immediately back down to normal revs again.
I have read that this could be the clutch, however, BMW said that there's nothing wrong with the clutch, and the problem has not been getting worse over time (which I would presume it would if the clutch was wearing).
Other things I have done to try and sort it out:
-Changed the air filter, checked for holes etc, in case it was to do with air pressure;
- changed the spark plugs;
- had the car serviced (where there were no apparent issues);
- ensured I only use Shell Optimax.
I just can't figure out what the problem is, and the dealer can't either apparently. Can anyone help? Could it be that the clutch is fine, but oil is somehow leaking into it and making it slip?

I thought the only way to see how good a clutch is to actually take it out look. I don't know how BMW told you it was fine.
How many miles are on the car? Does the clutch still feel normal?

It's at about 66,500 miles (107,000km). The clutch does feel normal to me, the friction point is a little high but i haven't felt anything abnormal other than that. Is there anything in particular that would indicate the clutch isn't how it should be? Originally Posted by chav

First gear does get a little hard to get into, I have to slowly release the clutch as I push it into first gear. It only does that when the car is idling for longer than usual(red light), afterwards its very smooth. I'm not sure if that has any correlation but i thought i'd mention it.
when it jumps to 5k, do you feel the gear disengaged? did you check the Manual Trans Fluid?

nothing is a life time except for BMW claims!!! lol
you can try to flush it out and put fresh oil. It is manual tranny, right?

Will definitely check that out. If that needed to be changed, would that be the cause of over-revving?
with the car sitting on its own, it does not over rev, right?
So when you put gas, the engine starts to rev higher...the engine response to the peddle when it under load is not the same when it is not under load. that is why, I think, when it slips or disengages, it revs high because there is a momentary load loss.
