Turn Signal Basics

OK, this is really simple stuff, but I'm not clear how to make the turn signal stay on - sometimes when I push the lever the signals come on for three blinks (I set that in the settings), but other times they stay on until after I've made the turn. I can't figure out what I do that makes the difference! The Owners Manual says "Press the lever beyond the resistance point.", but it's not helping me.

A light tap flashes them a few times....common on euro cars...like for a lane change...
A firm tap or push...leaves it on till you finish your turn...or you shut it off manually ....

Is lane change settings programmable? My '08 MCCS no longer does the one touch lane change! Is there a signal module that handles that or is it software?

Took me a dozen minutes to figure this out too when I first bought my car.

There's 3 ways to use the signal stalk:

- Lightly tap up or down to the first "stop" or point of resistance for 3 blinks. The number of blinks is adjustable in the settings I believe.

- Push up or down past the "stop" or point of resistance and release for a continuous blink. The signal stops when you either a) complete your turn or b) push the stalk in the opposite direction.

- Lightly tap and hold up or down to the first "stop" or point of resistance to manually hold a signal. I use this sometimes when I don't want to remember to turn it off.

In all cases, the stalk will return to the center resting position when released. This is what confuses new Mini drivers I think, since most cars will stay in whatever position you set.

The number of blinks is programmable. See instructions in your Owners Manual. It is software controlled, but I suppose it could also stop working if the lever switch is no longer making contact.

Really? One touch for a 3 blink lane change is something I wish all my cars had. So useful! I'll check the software. I've been through Setup dozens of times, don't knownhow I missed it!

Programmable as 1 flash or 3

GEN2 and later - not programmable on GEN1

Well mystery solved! Thanks all. It never occured to me that it would be programmable, so it would be key specific. I've been using my other key and it was set for 1 blink. Easy reset as explained in the Setup. Works as I want now. I don't know how I've missed that whole string in that setup all these years! Foglight lock, passenger door lock, etc. Though the whole quick press/long press thing is a PITA!

I can cancel the turn signal by pushing either direction on the stalk of my R55.

Using Carly for BMW on my R55 there is a third option of 5 flashes which is not visible in the dash screen options.
