Awe come on, it's only a 45 minute job.

Once you do over 100 of them it comes natural, you're 1% closer to being a thermostat installation expert. lol

When you work on BMW's for over 15 years you are a coolant expert

Lol, yeah, 1% of the way? Feels like it... Good lord, my first time in the back seat went smoother!

Biggest trouble - the water pipe clip. Lost it a dozen times, had a really difficult time getting it back on. Also had some other issues with getting the wrong parts etc, but mostly it was clearance problems, my big hands, and not having angled needle nose channel locks.

What I'm trying to sort out now is what to do with the second wire that plugs in to the top sensor on the housing. Looks like it adapts to the same plug that is in an aluminum piece in line with a hose that comes out the front of the housing. Do I unplug that and use the new one? Or is there some hidden connector on the wiring harness somewhere?

Well, I guessed. Plugged in the top sensor to where for forward sensor plugged in to the wiring harness. Check Engine light still on, but I only drove it around the block. Boost works fine. Temps seem fine. Doesn't appear to be dumping coolant, saw a few drips but that's probably from the pools that were left over from the job sloshing out as I drove.

Tried to use my Ultragauge to reset the CEL, no luck - said it was off and there are no codes. ?? Confusing. Hopefully it'll be ok when I drive to San Diego in the morning.

Pics , for certain year there is an adapter lead, do you have a pic ? Linked you here before, you can see the adapter leads based off month/ year production. Did you order this ?

OK, it was the temp sensor. Replaces the one in-line with the forward hose. Found out from the dealer today.

How long until the CEL goes off?

Also, what temp should I set my alarm at on the ultragauge? I don't want to overheat and want to be mindful of Temps.

If the fault has been rectified you should be able to clear the code with you Scangauge, and if the problem isn't persisting the light will stay off.

You can set the temp warning for whatever you want, but your car can see temps in excess of 230* just under normal operation.

The car will let you know when it is unsafe, just keep an eye on the coolant temp if you wanted a hobby to occupy your time while driving.

Figured that was it.

I run 219 to 226 F on the R58 JCW , you can go a bit high on DD. I would set it for like 250 or so.

Cel with go off after you have clear the codes. Should clear with your scan tool.

I just thought I ought to keep an eye on it since I was just working on the cooling system. Hasn't gone above 226.4.

The light still hasn't gone off. My Ultragauge doesn't show any alarms, pending TCs, and says my heck engine light is off. :/ Getting nervous, dunno why the light is sill on, it's got a brand new thermostat.

Cheers, good info.

Drove to SD, light stayed on the whole time. Eventually decided to swing by the mini dealer where I bought it brand spanking new and ask them to clear the codes. Welp, they said they had 35 cars ahead of me and couldn't possibly help me out, and I went back to my car all bummed out... Only to fine when I started it up, the light was gone! Yahoo !

Thanks everyone, really appreciate the help.

Do note that although your CEL isn't illuminated that the code is still stored in the system. You'll still want to get it cleared so you don't have old codes stored.
