Temp warning..yellow..then red..then gone.?

Hi all, hoping to get some guidance on where to start with this one. When I am entering highway on ramp and accelerating hard the yellow temp warning comes on followed by red temp light, then gone. I verified with ODB2 and Torque app that temps hit 116C (243F) then drop back down to 104 -108C ( 219-226F)when cruzing at highway speed.

I have no leaks, however when looking at coolant expansion tank when cold, it is at min, but if I take the cap off releasing the pressure a bunch of coolant pours in from one of the lines and fills it back to max. is that normal?

Thanks!

Should be running at around ~ 219, looks like its getting pretty hot. Maybe a stuck electrical thermostat. I would check all locations for leaks , had no coolant loss ? When cold fill th expansion tank up with coolant above the min and see if it drops next cycle otherwise check all leak locations. Sounds like there also could be air in the system or something. have you change out the thermostat before and bled it ?

Thanks for the reply!...Only had the car for a month, records from previous owner show thermostat was replaced July of this year from independent shop. Maybe they did not bleed it properly..I will try that and also double check coolant levels and any signs of leaking. None on the garage floor, but will check if there is any on top of transmission as you indicated it can pool up there.

Welcome,

yea if its been done, try going to the shop whom did the work first. That way they could cover it. Show them the DIY above and how to bleed and they can redo it.
