Speed governed at 85?

Hi all! I'm not exactly new to the forum, but just recently I purchased a MINI again. I'm the proud owner of a 2012 MINI Cooper S hatchback with about 25k miles. The other day I discovered I'd reached my "LIMIT" speed of 85 MPH. Is that normally what the car is governed at and can I change it with with affecting the warranty? Now, I'm no speed demon...ah hem...I just don't like the idea of being limited, of course. I had bought my 2011 Countryman, and it was NOT governed at 85, I can assure you of that. I love this car but I'm disappointed that someone did this. How do I change it?

Hm, I'm a new mini owner, so I can't really help, but when I drove the car on Laguna Seca I believe the fastest I went was a hair below 90(yes I'm that slow) so I don't think it's governed in all cars. I hopefully will know for sure in a couple of weeks when I might go to Thunderhill, I'm more comfortable with that track and it has a really long straightaway, in my previous car I was topping out at 115.

Um....no way. I hit 120 in my JCW and no signs of slowly down.

I think it's like around 140 ish.

Sounds kinda crazy...
Wonder if the last owner had something done for insurance reasons, or maybe he had a kid driving it....check with your dealer...sounds like something is NOT right.

Speed governed at 85?

Some other cars have both a cruise control and a user programmable speed limiter, but I've never seen it on a MINI. Maybe the 2014+ F5X models have it, but I'm pretty sure it's not available on the R5X second gen cars.

NO, my wife has been pulled over going over 90 and we have been side by side over 100 and I know mine goes to 141 before hitting speed limiter.

Weird. I know my car (non-MINI) the cruise control is governed at 89MPH. That is only when using the cruise control. My tuner said he can tune that out if I ever want to in the future.

Sounds like the old Chevy lumina Eurosport from the 90's I bought up in Alaska and drove to NH...I found I could not set the cruise any faster than the analog speedo would reach....85...but it would keep accelerating... Who knows how much faster....

Back to the op...
Look too see if you have anything plugged into the odb2 port...
You have got to have a 3rd party add on or modification to the car...either physically plugged in, or programmed in the computer....

I did this to my son when he was 16 , using HP Tuner I programmed max speed to 45mph and max rpm to 4K after 2 speeding tickets. He only HAD to drive to school in all 30 mph zones so gave him enough extra for emergencies but he learned his lesson, his friends thought it was funny .

Are you sure it's governed? I can set an audible signal with a visual LIMIT at any speed I want, but it just beeps and flashes at me. I can keep pushing to the car's max if I ignore it. I set mine at 80 just to keep my leadfoot of the throttle, but that gets ignored too sometimes, if I get carried away with that lovely sound!

The LIMIT is just a warning and not a limiter. Switch it off in the settings menu (with the engine running).

I took my 2013 MCS to Palm Beach International Raceway last month and got it to at least 113.

Maybe it isn't governed and it's just a warning...I didn't really have the chance to try out that theory, but I will. Seems stupid to put something up that says "LIMIT" and still have it be able to go faster, without knowing how fast that is. I'm sure the speedo dial on the center must still work, in that case. I'll play with the settings and try again to test it. I know perfectly well it still wanted to go faster.

Ya, it was pretty funny because I had no idea it was governed until I did a drive up the coast to have the car retuned by him. I found that out and I found out that the cruise control would kick off when the gas light was on, even if I had a little bit of time before needing gas.

Did you ever get a chance to see if it went faster?

I removed the "LIMIT" warning but haven't had a chance to stretch her legs again.

I screw with my wife with the "limit" warning light. I will set it to 45.

Ford's have a "My Key" programmable fob that the speed can be limited.

There is a warning for going over 85? Hmm well lets say I have gone pretty fast in my MINI and not once have I seen a warning or have I been governed. Off the shelf they are good for a top speed of I think 138 or somewhere in the low 140s.
