2011 Justa Check Engine light

This morning, on the way to work, the yellow CEL came on. The temp outside in the 20's F, Ice on the roads and piled high. I was scraping some of it. I checked the oil, and the coolant level. The coolant is slightly below minimum on the jug, but oil is good. I tried disconnecting the battery to reset the CEL, but it did not reset. I looked under the car and could see nothing hanging down or leaking.

My question is could the low coolant cause the CEL? I have less than 50,000 miles on the car and the active date is in May, so I think it is still under warranty.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Head to a local Autozone or Advance Auto parts and have them read the codes.

It'll tell you what caused the CEL.

Well, I planned on going to the mini dealer after work, but I guess the fear of the mini dealer put the scare into the CEL and it was not on when I started the car this afternoon.

Thanks for your response.

I would still have it checked, as it maybe the sign of something failing and very posibly will return. I'd want to catch it before the warranty expires.

Seriously a cheap code reader can be bought for $10-$20 now a days, I don't understand why everyone does not have one. Kinda hard to guess anything with cars anymore.

Buy the Torque app for your phone and get a bluetooth or wifi dongle to use with it. It'll allow you to read and clear codes on your own time.

I would like to get the app and the Bluetooth device for my Mini. Which dongle did you purchase?

is your mini an automatic or standard? were you caught in snow briefly and had to push the car a little hard to get it out?

Thanks for the info however, I need one that will function with Apple. I think eBay may be my friend on this one.

Be aware that some check engine lights are BMW only readable with a proper "factory" scan tool.

(These are the half/power/lit check engine lights).

Full blown check engine lights can be read with a generic aftermarket scan tool.
