R56 Wobble on high-speed acceleration
Wobble on high-speed acceleration
2011 R56S, 6 manual, 34k miles. Took to the dealer under remaining factory warranty for check engine light, poor cold start, misfire and fuel pressure codes, also to have a look at a wobble ONLY when accelerating quickly, esp in higher gears when merging onto freeway (50-80 mph or so). I suggested that the wobble under acceleration was a bad CV shaft, as I have seen that cause the exact same issue several times before on other FWD cars. (I am a career mechanic.) Dealer (MINI of Escondido, CA) replaced HPFP. Also found aux water pump problem, and replaced that. Said they felt my wobble, and swapped the wheels and tires from a new loaner car. Said the wobble went away, and suggested it was a wheel or tire issue. Took the car home, same wobble noticed, but original wheels and same tires back on car, so I expected that. The next day (today), I replaced my wheels with new 16x7 MB Motoring 7-spokes. Same tires, but all balanced out well on my 2-year old good-quality balancer at work, using a static balance. One took over 4 ounces of weight, but did balance out. (That one went on the left rear.) No defects in tires noticed on the spinning balancer, and no flat-spots or bubbles on tread or sidewalls. Still has the acceleration wobble, but none when cruising or decelerating, just as before. I suspect a faulty CV shaft. Anyone have a similar experience with a failing CV shaft? Are there any "trusted" brands in the aftermarket? My car is not lowered (yet). I am thinking of replacing the left shaft first, as it would seem to be the shorter one. Experiences? Ideas? Opinions?
Sorry for the long rant.
Thanks in advance---Chris
