Can an OBD reader see High Pressure Fuel Pump and Timing Chain faults?

Good question!! I'm running an OBDII with the Torque app...I'll be happy to check for you tomorrow on the Fuel Pump Pressure part. Don't have a clue on TC part...

The readers can see some faults that are caused by an HPFP or timing chain issue. Sometimes a dying HPFP will throw out the "fuel pressure not in spec" error, but often it won't.

Usually a bad tensioner won't give any error codes, though. Occasionally you'll see VANOS-related ones other other valve-timing ones, but it seems like the most common ways to find the chain tension problem are by listening for the "death rattle", or by having the engine jump time or the chain completely fail. You'll see error codes at that point, but it's rather too late then...

I monitor the Fuel Rail using the Torque app. I believe the Fuel Rail is showing me the fuel pressure delivered by the HPFP. I'm not an expert so maybe someone more knowledgeable can confirm.

The gauge shows app. 700 psi at idle but I'm not sure at other RPM's. I'm thinking I should chart the pressure at various engine speeds to give me a baseline to compare if I begin having problems.

Good idea, I also use Torque and monitor boost and air/fuel ratio...presently getting upwards of 17 lbs boost in 5th gear at 100 mph...and 14 1/2 to 1 fuel...results in 37 mpg on long trips!.
