DIY replacing head gasket help

I have a blown head gasket on my 2010 mini cooper s. I have been trying to find any links or any step by step info. I came across a few threads but not as detailed as I need. I would really appreciate any help or pdf files if anyone has the service manual?



I did find some info on the r53 head gasket replacement but im not sure how much of a difference there would be in the motors of if it would help.

I can't direct you to any specific article, but that said, I'd advise spending the $100 and getting the manual. At least you'll have a complete R&R scenario to short cut from. Plus a lot more. Bentley is the best but you can get a Haynes for about $30.

Get the Bently manual,cam locking tool, proper torque wrench and new head bolts. The bolts are single use only due to stretch. Without the cam locking tool you will not be able to time your cams as there are no visible reference marks. Bad things happen when valves have a meet and greet with pistons crowns. The Bently manual walks you through the process.

What happened to create this issue? I don't know of a DIY guide, but just getting back into NAM.

Yeah the Bentley manual has detailed pictures and step by step instructions. There are no PDF's manuals and detailed pictures, if there were people wouldn't bother buying the Bentley manual. Hope that makes sense.

I don't have it. That's why I'm asking if anyone has copied it into their computer and are able to share.. I know my boyfriend is on a Corvette forum, countless Honda forums, and a FRS forum and they all do that. I was just hoping that someone has done that for the Mini world.

That would be considered breaking the Law, Copyright Infringement, Theft and or Piracy.

I'm surprised you haven't gotten the hint by now.

Are you smoking pot? He wants the heads up on the whole process of removing the cylinder head from A-Z from beginning to end. I doubt he or she will be back anyhow.

I've got all the torque specs, procedures. The whole nine yards. But yet I've gotten no response except from typical smart *** idiots like you. I love the stooges that hide behind computers.

It's well worth the investment to purchase the Bentley Manual. Maybe you can find it used. Not sure if anyone has an electronic copy. But by not using it or something similar you run the risk of missing a small but important detail.

Like Tigger said, you will need the cam locking tools. These can be pricey, maybe you can rent one from someone here.

Just curious and not here to hi jack this.. But does anyone know what the cam locking tool cost? I would want the one that is meant to use on the mini. not one that kinda works lol.

I bought mine for 149 from a tool company in New Mexico I believe it was. Like Albuquerque tool or something like that. They advertised it on eBay.

Thanks SPRINTCARS That isn't a bad price. Does it work like it should? Or do you have to mod it a bit to work? Ive heard that some out there don't work quite right.

Worked perfectly for me. Only thing I would recommend is once it's on and everything is connected and tensioner plunger installed. Take it off and rotate it over. I installed a set of cams and thought it was all good. Cams ended up being off a tick. I think the best way is to install the tool. Install the plunger. Then tight the two cam sprocket bolts. Then rotate the motor to make sure it's good. Reinstall it to make sure it's all good. I jumped ahead quick but it's kinda easy. If you do it, ask me for my number and I'll call ya. I'll touch on it one more time.
Install the cams
Install the cam tool
Go underneath and install the tool to line up the crank
Loosen the crank balancer bolt.
Install the tensioner.
Tighten the cam bolts and crank bolt.
Take cam tools off.
Rotate it over
Reinstall tools to make sure it's correct still

It's pretty easy really. I was scared at first. But once you get the air filter and ducts off, intake off, exhaust manifold and turbo, then intake stuff on passenger side. Vacuum pump. HPFP. Cam sprockets. Them the cams. The bolts holding it on. It's off. I can do it in 2 hours now.

Thanks! Sounds good. I work on so many minis here at home that I need this cam locking kit. there have been a few that have approached me about changing out the whole timing chain cassette. So I know I will need this tool/kit. If you don't mind when the time comes if I could call you and we can go over it that would be cool.. Thanks again!

No problem. I got 3 heads. One was for finding the thin areas. One for porting and a stock one. Putting the porting one on a full build since there are people who can really work the ECU's now.
