Used mini issues

Hey guys

I recently bought a used 2007 MCS with 96k miles from a used car lot (dealer) and bought an after market warranty and little bit over 3 weeks later I started noticing a small drip from the transmission, decided to take it to a mini shop out here in LA and found out the car is a mess, transmission is leaking but its been rebuilt, I have a vacuum pump leak, water pump leak, chain tensioner leak, brake sensor on front is broken, oil pan is leaking, front left axle is bad and need new transmission mount. I called the warranty company to see what would be covered under tier 2 coverage that I got and only waterpump, axle and possibly transmission leak would be covered, maybe others but my mechanic would have to look at it thoroughly and report the claim.

I did not pay too much for the car but enough, I had my bmw 330i traded in for this mini and I love the car but to spend another $3000 or whatever the cost would be is a bit much right now.

I did know about the chain tensioner issue prior to the purchase.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have only owned my 2007 MCS for a little over a year and have spent $6000 already, replaced timing chain components ($1600 reimbursed by Dealer/Mini USA), valve cover, throwout bearing and thermostat housing. You purchased a money pit knowing full well you're going to be spending a fortune fixing it, how can you love that?

If $3000 is a bit much right now to put into it why did you even buy it knowing full well there's a lot wrong with it? Out of all the R56 MCS's 2007 was the worst year and had the most problems. I don't know what you were thinking when you purchased it...?

Do you even know what the compression is on all cylinders to get an idea of how healthy your engine is even though it's a rebuild?

Yea well i am not asking for your pity just wanted some advice on the problems, i was not aware of these issues prior to buying the car but it happend so i have to deal with it, how did you get the timing chain componets reimbursed by the dealer/mini usa, i called a dealer and gave them my vin, they said no recalls on my vin. oh and engine is not a rebuild, transmission is supposedly.

everyone can go on and tell me why did i buy it, well under my circumstances i did and now i have to pay for it, i will be taking to to a certified mini shop to get things taken care of.

Last October Mini USA started a campaign to fix all (most) timing chain components for MCS 2007-2010 with N14 engines because of all the numerous pending lawsuits here in the USA. I had my timing chain components replaced before the campaign started in October, I heard about others receiving reimbursement and then called Mini USA and they said to contact the dealer that did the work. I soon received a check in the mail several weeks later.

It's better if you contact Mini USA and ask them about the timing chain components campaign, one problem though, if Mini already paid to have it fixed whether in or out of warranty your one time freebie is all you get. Example, Mini USA covered the cost for my timing chain assembly kit, but if I have a second failure of the timing chain it's on my dime if it fails again.

As for the HPFP that's been extended by Mini USA to 120,000 miles or 10 years. I purchased a 6-year MaxCare extended warranty (not affiliated with CarMax), covers everything except for brakes, belts and normal wear and tear items. It's paid for itself and then some.

Thank you, I will give them a call on Monday and see what they say, since the tensioner isn't covered by the aftermarket warranty this would be a big help, appreciate it. Hope for the best

For the timing chain, check MINI as they might cover it. Think there was a TSB.

Vacuum pump here: R56 , R57 , R55, R58, R59 N14 MINI Cooper S and JCW engine

HPFP here : R56 , R57 , R55, R58, R59 N14 MINI Cooper S and JCW engine :: High Pressure Fuel Pump if not covered under the extended warranty.

Here is the cooling system, what to look for and fix. DIY it and you will save.

The coolant will first drip on the transmission housing then flow off the back when there is enough coolant to spill over the pooling. Here is all areas to check while you are there, so you don't overheat / leak down the road. I replaced mine with the updated thermostat unit and its been smooth ever since.

Also with the DIY linked if you tackle it yourself or have an independent do it. You don't want to overheat the engine.

Look for automatic or manual transmission mounts. Don't know if you have an automatic or manual?

thanks

Thank you for the help, I appreciate it, got my car back from the shop and it runs significantly better than it did before, the after market warranty covered the water pump as well as the chain tensioner, others I had to pay myself.

Updated part number on the Genuine MINI thermostat, was updated a while back ( still plastic ). The main water pump both Genuine MINI and all aftermarkets we carry are metal now also. Updated a little while back also.

Thanks
