R56 R56 Axle Shafts
R56 Axle Shafts
Long time since I have posted but, I am soon to be home from a deployment and need to fix a couple of things. As we all know lowered MINIs tend to eat axles and mine were starting to squeak when turning after lowering my MINI. I am also getting some binding when turning out of a down slope. I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction for axle shafts that don't cost a freaking fortune but, are still good shafts?
I've seen these guys mentioned a couple times here on the forums. They don't list specific part numbers for the MINI, but they seem to be real easy to get in touch with to discuss your needs and get a quote.

The only set I saw at DT were for the R53

The Drive Shaft Shop in NC only shows R53 axles on their web site. I have their level 2.9 475 whp rated axles on my heavily modded R53. At $875 they are actually cheaper than stock MINI axles. and "uprated " means much larger and stronger CV joints and better axle material. You should talk to them about coming up with a R56 axle. But be careful as the axles I got were wrong at first - a ground surface was .003 too large - had to send them back so they could fix that - but they did pick up the shipping both ways.
Yeah I talked to them but, they didntb sound interested in doing axles for the R56. I will ask them again and see what I can work out.

And I'm shocked I haven't gotten even 1 reply to my first post here after over 350 views.

Stock Axles are $1600-$1800 a pair. These guys sell R53 axels for 1/4 that! Do folks really see no need for an alternative for the R56?!

Unless you're getting vibrations from lowering I've not heard of anyone breaking axles. When we sold our mini it had over 1000 auto-x launches and a bunch of drag launches from pro solo. Some of those on r-compound tires. We had absolutely no issues with the axles.
Yea, mostly Gen 1 MINIs replacing axles , but most from damage on poor roads / wreaked or a ton of miles.
Not any aftermarket options for the Gen 2 Yet:

When you disconnect either left or right R56 axles does the transmission drain its trans fluid or is it sealed? Occasionally I get extreme vibration from the driver side and feels pretty intense like somethings unbalanced, since the first occurrence it's happening less and less as time goes on. It first started when I traveled to a city with the worst roads I have ever encountered! Wheel and hub bearings look fine, truly strange!

I had to disconnect the drivers side last weekend when I was doing the control arm bushings and outer ball joints because I found a loose boot clamp on the inside boot. A small amount drained out. I had some extra from when I drain and refilled it last year. It didn't really amount to much though. 1/4 - 1/2 cup maybe.
How about remanufactured axles like this: http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/2010/mini/cooper/driveshaft_-ar-_axle/axle_assembly.html?

That's because the threads aren't about axle replacement (the solution), but vibrations (the problem) Plenty of threads on this.

lowered mini cooper vibrating site:www.northamericanmotoring.com
The mini I had lowered was vibrating immediately from a simple h&r install. Guess I'll be going about this on my own then.
