Question on trade-in

I apologize if this is a dumb question, but I emailed an MA and haven't heard back so I thought I might get my answer here faster.
I was curious when one does a trade-in on their current MINI to a new custom order MINI, does the dealer take the trade-in car at the time of order? Or can you keep the trade-in until delivery of the custom order MINI? And does the dealer give you a projected trade-in value of the current car during time if order, or is this all done during delivery? Thanks!

Most dealers give a trade in value according to the condition and milage. They also concider how in demand the car is. If you are not that far from the dealer have them give you a trade in value now. Then while you are waiting for your order to come in try and sell it on your own (if you can live without the car until your order comes in) if you sell it for more money in your pocket if you cant sell it you can always trade it in when your order comes in. Selling it can net you more money than a trade in. You are not obligated to trade it in just because they gave you a value.

Good luck

Yes, you keep it
They should value it and when yours comes in as long as theirs nothing major that has changed aka damage or a ton more miles, the should hold true to what they said

Our MA didn't want to even give us a trade in value at the time of order for our last couple. All the important stuff is done at the time of delivery.

I would walk away. I'm not putting a car on order with the intent of trading my car in without knowing how much they'll give me for it. That's a hell of a bait and switch. Good way to keep the pressure on you and lowball you on your trade because you already ordered an are picking it up.

Bottom line: If you plan to trade your car in on ordering a brand new one, GET A TRADE VALUE IN WRITING before placing the order.

I got a ball park quote before I ever went to the dealer. We set a time, they evaluated my trade, we came to an acceptable figure for both parties, I ordered my mini on the spot and drove my trade till my mini arrived...I'd find another dealer...Patrick Mini just outside of Chicago has been fantastic to deal with.....and my mini only took a shade over 4 weeks from order to delivery.

The OP hasn't even got a quote from their dealer yet. OP only emailed a question about a trade and has not gotten a response yet but your telling them to find another dealer. I dont believe he was complaining about the dealer in question was just looking for resopnses on the board until the dealer gets back to them.

My dealer gave me a trade-in value when I placed my order. They did a visual check, did calculations and gave me a written signed quote. As long as there are no major changes, the value will hold.

I agree with InjectGT if that dealer wont give you a quote for the trade in value up front I would go to a dealer that will. Just because the dealer gives you a quote on a trade in you can still try to sell it on your own to try and get more than the dealer will give you for it. The trade in and the purchese are two seperate trans actions. Even though they try to roll it into the same deal. If you take it to CarMax they will buy your car for what ever the quote you. Weather you buy another car from them or not you get the same price for your trade in. Just look at the differance between the trade in value and the private party value in KBB it could be a few thousand dollars difference. If you dont want the hassle of the private sale trade it in. If you want to try to make more money sell it private party.

At least here in NY, the trade value comes off the taxable portion of the purchase. So, if they give you $11k for your trade, and you are buying a $30k MINI, then you would pay tax on $19K. Where I live, we pay 8.75% sales tax, so that is significant. I don't know if it works that way where you live.

If you decide to sell it privately, then the tax has to factor in it.

Good luck, and have fun,
Mike

Carmax's quote I got for mine was a lot less than trade-in quotes from dealers so it probably depends on the area...nice to have another quote in hand anyway though.
