Mid-grade vs. Premium Fuel

With gas prices @ $4+ now I'm reluctant to use Premium BP every time I need gas. Will an occasional tank of mid-grade cause problems with my R56 (just turned 97,000 miles) or even a switch to mid-grade for several tank-fulls before a fill with the high-$$ fuel, maybe every 3,000 miles?

Probably not. These threads have been posted for years. Here's what I fail to understand: 91 octane is 20 cents more than 87 and 10 cents more than 89 in my state. I have the opportunity to save between $1.40 and $2.80 every time I fill up no matter what the gas prices are. That's either one or 2 cups of coffee at Circle K. What difference does that gas price make?

Agreed 20 cents per gallon on a 13 gallon tank is only $2.60. If you want to save money pay with cash, prices are lower if you pay with cash, at least in Connecticut the price is as much as 10 cents a gallon less if you pay with cash

Gas is cheap and Minis get good mileage. I know a guy with a 50 foot boat. Deisel is about $6/gal, and it gets ONE MPG! 500 gallon tank. Try them apples.

I agree totally.....the quality/octane of fuel is not a wise bargain hunt. Try going out less....you'll not only save money on fuel, you'll save money on food.

The mpg falls off on my na 2010 MINI offsetting the 10 cent price reduction for 89 octane and making it an illusionary savings.

Why risk it, you've had 97,000 good miles with premium and as others have said you're not saving that much.

That is so cool! How do you do that?

Nobody has mentioned the expense of having the knock sensor replaced as a result of trying to save a couple of bucks using improper fuel.
The report from a service chart:
"Troubleshoot check engine light. Found
fault for the knock sensor. Remove front
bumper, remove intake manifold, remove
alternator, and remove supercharger.
Remove and replace knock sensor. Cleared
faults and reassembled vehicle."
Labor 5 hours at $84.00 and a $26.00 part.

Cheap gas or all day fun motoring?

As a MINI guru once told me," for every penney you try to save on cheaper fuel in both octane and quality, you will more than spend on addtional maintenance.". Can't go wrong following the book on this one.
