RED Brake light, sensor re-set???

Have an 07 Mini,,, front brakes really needed to be changed - finally got around to it.. brake sensor was back ordered??? read here, looked at the sensor.... I see how it is a close loop - sensor wears, opens loop - throws light... So, I took the cheap, short cut, lol... cut the old sensor off, twisted the wires and put on shrink tubing... also did this for the rear - rear brakes still have meat on them, did not need to change them out.. So, searched on here... have tried the reset several times,, all are amber except the front brake sensor light... shows -4700 miles for the brakes, lol did the reset, little clock did the spin,, did NOT reset the miles.. acts like the sensor is still open,,, The trick of cutting and twisting the wires seems to be able to fool the system, as long as the loop is closed,,

any thoughts..

also, the lift light still comes on, that reset shows 2014 and plenty of miles, but it still comes on when starting the car??

that trick works on gen1 cars....
the sensor on gen2 cars seems to be more sensitive to the impedance of the circuit...so from what I have been hearing, it usually will not work.

Kinda what I thought... no real big issue.. I know its got new brakes.. just tired of seeing that red brake light..

BTW - would those also keep the RED lift light on??? in the cycle through,, the lift is amber and looks to be re-set??? what else might make it red on start up??

Nah you have to replace them. I tried all of that on MTTS 2010 and it didn't work. I had just replaced my brakes but, the auto part store gave me the wrong rear sensor. You could buy new ones and hook them up but, tie them up outside the brake just make sure you check them every 10k or so.

update - pulled the front sensor off and was about to order one, when I got to thinking... I cut the back one off and tied the two wires together and I was able to reset the back sensor in the computer - So, why the trouble with the front... Since I had it off the car... cut back to really clean copper wire,,, got out my soldering gun and put them together and soldered them good... plugged it back in and BINGO, I was able to reset the front and the RED lift also went away... So, both are out of my hair for good.. I plan to do a complete post on my feelings on DIY brake job..

Thanks for the help here.

if it is still not working... try what I did,, take them off, on the bench, cut to clean copper wire and solder them ...

I have one quick question, if anyone can advise. My 2010 justa just went over 50k miles and the service info says I have 700 miles left on rear brake and 10000 miles left on front brake. Is this right?

Thanks.

almost certainly not

but realize that these warnings come from counters and the computer 'evaluating' things

search here and you'll find any of my several posts about checking brake pad health ... it ain't rocket science and depending on your wheels - you don't even need a jack

Thanks, Capt_bj. I need to change the tires soon, so I will take a look at them then. I reset the warning info few months ago (it was like 700 miles) and it got reset to 8000 miles or so. Then it went down to 1000 miles last week and 700 miles this week...

that DOES sound like the wear sensor may have been hit ... I'd do an eyeball check soon. If the pad material is not thicker than the backing plate it is time.

My warning popped up but eye ball said I was good and I reset getting 8000, I think the sensor was tripped tho which resulted in the 8k reset and once the sensor is tripped things count down FAST ... this is what I observed recently on my 7 anyway . . after I jumpered the worn sensors things reset to a much higher number that I don't remember (18,000?) . . . b4 folks tell me the sensor knows/reports how much wear... I've dissected one; it ain't that smart

Much different from a GEN1 that just had a sensor ... no miles counters ... or better yet an EARLY GEN1, my 02 had no pad wear sensors. And I've jumpered 'em out on my 07 now. Everytime I reset the counter now, it will see a complete circuit.

I got 45,000 out of the rear pads and 40k out of the fronts but fronts were changed to EBC Green at 5k just in case you wondered. I reset the counters once to full value after an eyeball check .. b4 the sensors tripped is my guess.
