Oil residue on top of valve cover

Is it normal? There are no leaks around, no abnormal oil consumption, no stains on garage floor, but it kinda bothers me as imho engine should be dry and clean unless there are leaks, i.e. repairs are needed.

Is it possible to open the top portion of the valve cover to see what's going on there?

I have the exact same thing just happen to me. I would like to know what is causing this.
I checked my oil level and it is normal.
I will clean this up today and try to see where the leak is coming from.

It's either a bad valve cover gasket, or there's a crack in the cover or PCV system itself.
Clean the area, and see where the seepage occurs afterwards.

It's looking like a broken PCV valve that is built into the valve cover. you will have to replace it. Not too hard of a job really, that almost anyone could do. This is starting to be a problem on more gen 2 cars.

I have the same problem with my 08 "S". Do you need to replace the gasket when you replace the cover? Where is the best place to get the cover and basket?
The dealer pricing is outrageous... Please advise.
Thanks.

As a rule of thumb, it's always highly recommended you replace any gasket you open up.

Besides the dealer? Not much else other than PenskeParts.com or ECSTuning.com

passportautoparts.com seems to be a good source too.

I'd have to get a firm price on it but $285-$300 is the norm (plus shipping). It will come with all gaskets needed. Detroit Tuned can get you any OEM MINI part for a good price, we sell everything at list. Some items are on our web but most are not, you just have to give us a call.

I've had good luck and good prices with parts.com on BMW and MINI OEM parts.

How are things with your valve cover since you had your gaskets replaced? Any noticeable difference? Do you think that fixed the problem? I have the same symptom on my Cooper S and was just curious.

Hi I am having the same issue on my 2008 mcs with 53000 mils. Can you please let me know if changing the gasket was enough or if you had to change the cover as well.

Thank You
Pavan

Here is the valve cover gasket: N14 engines

OEM MINI part number: 11127572851 : Click the picture below for item.

&

N14 engine valve cover OEM MINI part number 11127646555

If the valve cover is leaking all the way around its most likely the cover itself.

Thanks

Hey ECS, is this valve cover redesigned or is it exactly the same as the original on my 2008 MCSm.

I'm hoping that Mini redesigned it so for my $250 bucks it traps more oil so less going through the PCV to stick to my valves!

Thank you. I suspect the valve cover it self as its near the pcv hose on the right side where I find the residue. Thanks again for the pics and part#.

should I use a RTV sealant while replacing valve cover

Hi Guys,

I cant find it now but there was one thread that said Bentley suggests to use a RTV sealant. I don't have a Bentley manual so may I ask If any one used a sealant and at what places on the gasket.

Thank You
Pavan

I have a 2007 MCS with a suspected bad cylinder head / valve cover.

When I do an online parts lookup at MINI of South Atlanta the results show the old part number 11127585907.

Does the new design part 11127646555 fit all years of the N14 engines?

Edit: I did a search at another online parts source and the cross reference returned part 11127646555 - but any confirmation is welcome before I shell out ~$300.

Sorry for late response, but yes, new gaskets fixed the issue.

The valve cover for the R55 R56 R57 N14 engines has been updated.

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/11127646555/ES2601877/

If you dump a part number into our site the super-session will show and you click on the ES# and it will take you to the new part.

The gasket is the same number as before.

OEM MINI part number: 11127572851 : Click the picture below for item.

&

Oil Label sticker Part # 01000419179 ( Which is used on all MINI engine bays in multiple locations dependent on year and model )

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/01000419179/

And the little yellow ignition coil sticker looks to be part #71227618790

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/71227618790/ES2674957/

And what it look like:

Thanks

Cover 11127646555 comes with a red ring on the rear port and an excess pressure relief valve packed in a separate ziploc bag. I assume the ring gets pulled out and the check valve put in its place, correct?

Yes,

In the zip lock bag come the little seal / adapter you see in the pictures and the pictures have been updated.

In the bag is a little paper with instructions for the seal adapter.

Thanks and hope that helps.
