I had the same problem on my 07 and it was a simple fix. I removed the hose that goes into the valve cover and re-attached it. I think it was loose or not sealed right. Anyway it fixed the problem. I haven't had any oil on the valve cover since.

Hi there. How are you?

I'm new here and I need to replace a defective valve cover but I've noticed two different part number as described in this post. Somebody knows what's the difference between these two parts? What changed on the new one?

I have the similar issue.
Did you guys just changed the gasket or the valve cover as well to fix the problem.
I have both near spark plug area and around the corner areas leaking.
Would you recommend changing the gasket first to see if it fixes or
the valve cover since there is newly designed (new part #) cover?
Also, what is the timing chain tensioner seal? my dealer quoted me changing both gasket & seal.

Are you running an OCC and if so, have you blocked the one side (curb side) to force everything to the catch can? This has been known to build pressure and cause the exact oil trace that you are seeing. (I can't see the pictures on my phone)

ECS,

The only way I have read to verify if the valve cover is bad (bad PCV) is to remove the oil fill cap and put on a pressure gauge.
I have bad carbon build-up on valves (already walnut blasted it) and a lot of oil in the intake track and all the way down to the intercooler.
I’m assuming the PCV failed long ago. 150,000 on the engine and highly doubt the cover was replaced.

Is this true? If so, can you link to the correct gauge and specify what the correct pressure reading should be on a new cover?

Thanks

Hello,

We don't currently have a gauge to measure vacuum/ pressure on the engine. I believe if I remember someone reading it and then determining what the stock pressure is, i will have to dig around to find it. If you have a leak, hiss noise, CEL(related to pressure/vacuum), or consuming oil like crazy. 9 times out of 10 its this cover. Only other thing is rings, or turbo oil leak internally.

Thanks. I also remember someone posting it. I think it was around 37psi. Maybe?

No hissing or CELs. Just a lot of oil where it shouldn’t be.

If the pvc is broken inside the valvecover, could there be pressure building up? I can hear air while the engine is running, turn off the engine and I can hear air bleeding off. Pop open the oil filler and it's like opening up a can of beer.

You are hearing a vacuum leak. Yes it can cause other issues in the engine.

What’s it do?

I’m new to being a Mini owner, my experience is with American muscle cars, so this is a learning experience!!

I’m wondering about the purpose of the orange tab sticking out of the back of the valve cover? I have put in a new AEM CAI and the air box pushes right up against this valve, just want to know how much clearance this valve needs to operate properly.

Thanks in advance for your help!

It's part of the absurdly complex pcv system integrated into the $320 valve cover.. As long as you aren't covering it or pressing against it, you won't interefer with it's function.

So it’s function is to ventilate the valve cover? I ended up drilling a hole in the air box of the CAI where this valve was pressing against it.

More like the valve cover is their to ventilate the crankcase. The positive crankcase ventilation system, PCV, is integrated into the valve cover and that red part in the back of the valve cover is a piece of it.
