Engine noise around 2K RPMs

Hello-

Just bought a 2008 MCS with 38,000 miles on it, and I'm hearing a noise for the motor that doesn't sound right. It almost sounds like an exhaust leak, but sounds like ti's coming from the motor itself. Higher revs, it goes away, but around 2K, I can hear it. Not like a knocking, but more of a rattle. Any ideas? I would think it was the timing chain, but it isn't that knocking sound I hear. Thanks very much for the help!

Updated with a video of the sound I shot an hour ago:

Jack it up and check the heat shields on the exhaust. Best place to start.

Thanks for the response! I looked that that and everything seems OK. I did just add a video to the original post, I shot about an hour ago. Maybe that will help diagnose the problem?

Hmmm, I would go get it looked at. Instead of trying to internet hack diagnosis it.

Yeah...it's going in on Thursday...but the dealer is 80 miles away. Just wanted to make sure it was something that had to happen. Thanks for the reply!

Good call Porthos. Still, didn't hurt to check for a rock under a heat shield. 160 miles, wasted vacation and all.
Glad you got it taken car of early.

Yep! You were right! I was hoping for something less like 4xAAA suggested. I've had rocks caught in catalytic converter shields before, and it sounded similar, but upon closer inspection, it was coming from the chain area...so I made the anointment. Once you mentioned that your chain sounded like that, I figured it must be that. Thanks everyone for your help!

Good to go meng! These engines can be finicky some times and the amount of stuff could be from several different things.

Yeah...My other two cars are BMW's with inline sixes...so what's sure what to listen for. The sixes are so smooth and quite. Love this little motor though!

Got MCS on Friday...oh man... So much better!! They even fixed a few other things all covered under warranty...reprogrammed passenger side window so it would auto dip again, water pump recall, passenger side aluminum door sill trim, and chrome trim around key fob! I'm a happy camper! Thanks for the help everyone!
