R56 Vacuum pump seizure...
Vacuum pump seizure...
Have a 2008 MCS with 57K (out of warranty). I was driving on the highway, when my engine shut down. Had it towed to dealer, who diagnosed vacuum pump seizure with resultant timing chain breaking and engine damage. They recommend replacing the engine block, given the extent of the damage. MINI has offered to pay 50% of $6,000.00 repair costs, even though out of warranty, as a goodwill gesture. I have routinely checked my oil levels (yes, the dipstick is a pain in the a$$ to read).
Any thoughts on whether to push the issue further, given that these appear to be "known" design flaws with the engine? I am an attorney, and I am pondering on whether or not to threaten suit. On one hand, technically speaking, they COULD hang me completely out to dry. I am leaning toward taking the deal and cutting my losses, but I wanted some kind input from some of my fellow MINI owners.

Lots of threads already exist about this.
My '08 did the same thing at about 51K miles. Mini started with a much higher estimate, closer to $9K. Service advisor suggested that a 50% "share" would be a likely outcome. However, in the end Mini picked up 100% of the costs for a new motor installation.
Could have helped that I also have a 2010 from the same dealership, have purchased 10+ cars from their affiliates over the years, and have my servicing done there.
Good luck in your case. You might read the other threads. The knowledge that Mini has gone 100% many times might help you. If you've got the receipts and records for your service visits, that should help too.

Anyone know what it costs to replace the vacuum pump? Can we assume that this fellow's pump did not fail due to low oil level?
I wonder whether this should be considered a lifed service part......
