What Belt?

Seat Belt?

Timing Belt? but this would actually be a chain

Fan Belt?

Serpentine Belt?

What are you asking info on?

General rule I follow is every time I change the oil is to examine the belts and twice a year to examine all rubber components (I do before winter and before summer). If I see any hints of cracks or extra wear, it's replace time regardless of mileage. But, if you're looking for the recommended replacement time, Schatzy62 has the ball with the right questions.

It's a chain, so the replacement interval is "during an engine rebuild". Or if there are problems with the chain and/or tensioner.

When you hear a loud rattle, it's time to change it.

I just did my serpentine belt and it wasnt too bad. I ordered a generic version of the BMW special tool for $42 off of eBay. I did remove a bunch of stuff to gain access, and loosened the motor mounts to tilt the motor as needed. I also ordered a new tensioner and "deflection pulley" as I was told it was wise to replace those at 96k miles too. Uh...yeah, so those are IMPOSSIBLE to get off without either specialty tools or pulling the motor out of the car. I gave up on replacing those two items nearly right away and they're still sitting brand new in their boxes. New belt seems like it has good enough tension with the original tensioner still in there. Oh well.
As for the old belt at 96k miles, it actually surprisingly looked great, no cracks or anything.

I replace the serpentine belt when I was doing the timing chain at about 100k miles.
I don't think it was ever replaced before and it looked bad. Cracking everywhere.
At that time, I didn't replace the whole tensioner. Only replaced the pulley on the tensioner which cost so much less.

So with the 4 cyl, How do you replace the altenator? Do you have to pull the engine?
I barely got the tensioner off the belt, but could not get the belt out. just out of the way..
