R56 what was your first mod? were you happy with your decision?
I work on those engines. That isn't a flywheel, it is there to jack the engine over, when doing maintenance on it. There is an electric motor with a gear that slides into and meshes with that big gear.
The crankshaft is so heavy, it doesn't need a flywheel.

My first mod was tires and wheels. Probably my best mod, too.
I got them from Tire Rack before the MINI was delivered in March of 2003.
They sat in an upstairs room waiting for the MINI to be built and delivered and for the last snow to go by.
I ordered the MINI with the 15" wheels, which I've been using each winter.
Wheels: SSR GT1 16x7 42ET (15#, strong, they stopped making them years ago).
Tires: Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole position in 205/50/16 (sidewalls a little stiff, a little
on the heavy side, but they were great tires while they lasted - also no longer made).

My first mod was lowering springs. Wasn't happy with them, got coilovers, much better decision.
Removed the stock airbox and for a DIY CAI this morning. Like it but I think I am gonna custom it up some more and run a strait(ish) pipe from the Turbo to the vent by the headlight and a make a custom airbox there. Will have to move the reservior to the back and move the MAF way forward.
My first mods were the installation of my Radar Detector near the mirror (if you call that a "mod"), if not I installed my racing stripes (silver on BRG). Both definitely put a smile on my face. Love the stripes, adds a ton of character...now just need to work on the suspension a bit!
My first mod, the day after I picked up the car, was to whack the RF's and put on non-RF tires. VERY happy to get the cinder blocks off the car. In less than a week after I got the car (12/5/11) I put on the Alta stubby, racing stripes, vinyl wrapped headlight and tail light trim, rubber boot liner, window tint, "Objects in mirror are losing" decals on mirrors, JCW grill surround trim, and the ecoRoute for my new Garmin Nuvi 1490. It's coming together very nicely.
1st: Window tint 35% on the sides and back. Love the look and nighttime driving is much better. Also put a Richard Grant rear bumper guard on to protect the bumper top from dog paw scuff. Works great, but is a little slippery (hard plastic not rubber).
2nd: Euro armrest. With no right arm support, I'd get home from an hour drive with a sore neck/shoulder. Problem gone.
3rd: Aero spoiler and factory alarm.
4th: Rear fog and GO-badges.
Next: Front factory foglights, rear seat delete (more room for the dogs).

Very first mod was to install a Craven Speed tow hook front plate mount. It was on my kitchen table waiting before I owned the car.
Then it was 17" R112 replica wheels from A-Spec and new Pirelli P-Zeros. The oem 16s are getting snow tires thrown on them.
Next was an Outmotoring stubby antennae and some rubber floor mats for the winter as well so I can save the carpeted ones.
Next is to tint the windows and start saving up for more mods!

Moss leather door grabs.
WGI sticker.
Maxed negative front camber (free).
Added strap to help pull down hatch.
WMW scoop heat shield attempt - didn't fit, now modding the mod....
Lowered rear license bracket to install frame.
Next remove seat height adjuster, which snags my jeans on egress.
Then tires....
Then ****...

Reviving the Dead Thread!!!!
My first mod was slapping my V1 by the mirror, and LEDS throughout the interior. Had them laying around from last 2 VWs and figured put em to good use. Future mods Tint all around, Plastidip the Chrome and Wheels, NCSExpert cable and knowledge.
